Having followed Jodie's progress as she approached the end of her time in juniors and was moving more into senior tournaments and in particular watched her live looking close to taking out eventual Australian Open Girls champion, Marta Kostyuk, in January 2017, I do think it rather anomalous to her apparent potential that she was outside the top 500 ( WR 503 ) 18 months later, in the first rankings of August this year when already aged 19 ( she ended 2017 WR 537 ). That was 18 months of not pushing on as could be expected.
The recent upturn in results and apparent performances is very welcome but I do think certainly not before time, and hopefully she can continue on a solid upwards path. Looking at least towards top 300 next year seems very reasonable to me.
I knew nothing of the JTC set up so leave that to others but interesting to read the varying thoughts.
For the most part I agree with Indi, personally I think she should have transitioned earlier or gone to college and fell between two stools hedging her bets, working that out is what I feel has cost her a year of development. Fran had a plan A, play juniors until the potential to develop dried up as opposed to going through the motions in most matches as a junior. The development concept of winning a third easily, winning a third jus and loosing a third is pretty solid obviously it needs to be adjusted to allow ranking progression.
As Dan Evans said in his recent interview we dont have enough players who can hit it in, fine hitting hard but the former is the fundamental that allows you to win. Stepping up and hitting it in when it is hit hard is the first step, then you have to incrementally develop the technique to hit back in and hard. Freya has a lot of natural ability and athletism but struggles a bit with this whole process. Hopefully she will become more patient and with the right coaching it will be something she can mature into.
Jodie withdrew from Shrewsbury today, Katy is down for China next week along with her Aussie mates. I agree, Gabi still hedging her bets. Weekend in Canberra, match in Shrewsbury on Wednesday next - pretty unlikely.
Edit: - Corrected to China as pointed out by Indi
