Khachanov beat Thiem 6-4 6-1 to reach the final and move up a further place to live rank 12, overtaking Fognini.
Best he can do though is get to WR 11, overtaking Coric, if he wins the final. So needs a very unexpected O2 pull-out, over and above the not unlikely Del Potro and Nadal, to do a Sock. Nishikori and Isner will be WR 9 and 10 respectively.
Federer and Djokovic have just started in the other SF.
Just to record it - Djokovic beat Federer in a final-set tie-break to reach the final agains tKhachanov. Federer saved all 12 of the break points he faced.
The year has seen some really good progress from many of the younger generation. Not yet to be a Slam champion ( or finalist ) but I have more of a feel that it is coming.
In Monday's rankings there will be 12 under 24s in the top 40 ( 6 in the top 16 ). In ranking order : Zverev, Coric, Khachanov, Edmund, Tsitsipas, Medvedev, Chung, Shapovalov, de Minaur, Kyrgios, Jarry and Tiafoe.
Kyle is the oldest of these 12, and one of just three 23 yos ( Kyrgios and Jarry are the others ) so he certainly needs to be continuing to improve because for sure many of these younger guys will be getting better and better.
On a similar vein, the average ranking this year of the top 8 in the next gen rankings was 38.875. ( this is the top 8 ie incl zverev and Shapovalov who aren't actually taking their places in the next gen finals). A year ago, the equivalent top 8 cohort (which included zverev, he was the only one who didn't play in Milan who qualified), had an average rank of 44.875 last year, so a difference of some 15 percent or so from this year. Looks like the younger players this season have definitely improved on their equivalents from a year ago.
