but went down 12-10. Good two weeks from neal, should be pleased with that.

Right down to the wire:

QF:  (1) Oliver Marach & Mate Pavic (AUT/CRO) CR 5 (2+3) defeated John Isner (USA) & Neal Skupski CR 102 (68+34) by 7-6(6) 6-7(4) [12-10]  hmm

to be fair, Marach and Pavic won 14 more points than neal and Isner, 97-83, so probably deserved this win

Tough way to lose...

Khachanov has trounced Sasha Zverev 6-1 6-2 so will overtake Kyle in the rankings.

Kyle will still be up a net one place on the week to WR 14. That though will 'just' tie his existing CH rather than set a new one.

Would have no doubt been a tough match but pity that Kyle missed the chance to perhaps keep Mr Khachanov in check in a L32 match.

But WR 14 is not too shabby at all. Well done Kyke on your year and the progressive steps forward within it.

Marach & Pavic, having pulled out the stops to beat John & Neal, have given a w/o in the SF to Granollers & Ram

Khachanov beat Thiem 6-4 6-1 to reach the final and move up a further place to live rank 12, overtaking Fognini.

Best he can do though is get to WR 11, overtaking Coric, if he wins the final. So needs a very unexpected O2 pull-out, over and above the not unlikely Del Potro and Nadal, to do a Sock. Nishikori and Isner will be WR 9 and 10 respectively.

Federer and Djokovic have just started in the other SF.

Officially no Del Potro in London cry (I mean, it's not a surprise but still).

Just to record it - Djokovic beat Federer in a final-set tie-break to reach the final agains tKhachanov. Federer saved all 12 of the break points he faced.

Djoko has lost the first set to khachanov, from a break up as well. He seems to do well indoors, hope khachanov can keep this going.

Khachanov takes the title 7-5 6-4.

A Masters title for the 22 yo and a 7 place rankings jump to WR 11

The year has seen some really good progress from many of the younger generation. Not yet to be a Slam champion ( or finalist ) but I have more of a feel that it is coming.

In Monday's rankings there will be 12 under 24s in the top 40 ( 6 in the top 16 ). In ranking order : Zverev, Coric, Khachanov, Edmund, Tsitsipas, Medvedev, Chung, Shapovalov, de Minaur, Kyrgios, Jarry and Tiafoe.

Kyle is the oldest of these 12, and one of just three 23 yos ( Kyrgios and Jarry are the others ) so he certainly needs to be continuing to improve because for sure many of these younger guys will be getting better and better.

On a similar vein, the average ranking this year of the top 8 in the next gen rankings was 38.875. ( this is the top 8 ie incl zverev and Shapovalov who aren't actually taking their places in the next gen finals). A year ago, the equivalent top 8 cohort (which included zverev, he was the only one who didn't play in Milan who qualified), had an average rank of 44.875 last year, so a difference of some 15 percent or so from this year. Looks like the younger players this season have definitely improved on their equivalents from a year ago.
