Week 43 - ITF ($60K) - Bendigo, Australia Hard

Bad miss at 30-30* brought another scream. No breaks in the third set.

*3-3

Gabi gets a lucky net cord at *40-30 and Perez ( who has just been going about her business ) attempts to boot the ball to kingdom come. Was a poor attempt though and just went off the side of her foot.

4-3*

From 15-15* a bad miss is followed by a shank from deep in the court and the racket appears by itself back in vision before Gabi.

Somehow got to advantage but was aced which brought a racket to the floor. A further advantage point was lost. Another exclamation and the poor racket to the floor again.

*4-4

Broken to love. The racket was threatened with really serious trouble a couple of times but she didn't go through with it.

4-5*

Perez served it out to 15 in effective fashion and gives a yell in victory. And Gabi seemed past yelling or throwing and perfectly politely shook Perez's and the umpire's hands ( not that she had a problem with either of them in what I saw, it being all internal ). From 4-3* Gabi's advantage 11 of the last 12 points were lost.

It was err different. The wind, time of the month, maybe someone mistook her for a ball girl (similar outfits )? Who knows, hope nothing very serious.

SF: (2) Gabriella Taylor WR 172 lost to (7) Ellen Perez (AUS) WR 214 (=CH) by  7-6(7) 6-7(2) 6-4

Had Gabriella won today I believe it would
Have been her single biggest points haul. Maybe with that being at stake it was playing on her mind and she maybe felt favourite to win.

A win would have taken Gabi to 48 points. She has won 50 points five times in the last couple of years with her 25K titles.

It would have set up a match for her biggest title and most points but I feel that there has to be more to it than that.

Like the others I found it peculiar to an extent that she was so reacting at all but mainly just how ongoing it was. I didn't see the early stages but the others don't seem to have seen anything to cause it. I also hadn't seen her for a while so don't know if this has been creeping in.

But moody she was and while she stopped herself a number of times from giving her racket a proper pummelling into the ground, it was fair chucked about ( the moment it slid into view on court while Gabi was out of picture was rather amusing though ).

As I said, while giving some flippant possibilties, I do hope that there is nothing very serious behind today's petulance.

May I say that I never heard anything really bad or saw real violence towards her racket hence no need for any interventions, athough if that racket had just once taken a bounce and headed off to touch a ballboy we would have been into the territory that Naomi Broady once got into an unfortunate tizz about regarding an idly tossed to the side racket. But boy was she in a foul mood.

What a shame for Gabi. It was painful to watch at times. She just didnt seem to be able to get herself into s positive state of mind. If she had, she'd have walked this match.

Please dont blame time of the month though, Indy. Its sounds so patronising, and makes many (most) women wild. And please dont tell me you dont mind it if youre a woman because that doesnt make any difference to those women who do find it patronising and irritating.

It was as serious a suggestion as the accompanying suggestion of maybe she had been mistaken for a ball girl. What I will apologise for is if I have been seen to make light of a real issue for many women. And before I get totally out of my depth I will say no more.

Disappointing loss really.

Unless things continue on an upward curve Gabby could be looking at a huge drop at the start of 2019. A few more points hauls on this tour to gain confidence and then a few wins in the January swing could save things.

To be honest, to beat a couple of Japanese players ranked 260-310, one of which has been in terrible form and then Sharma, which was a good win as the Aussie is in good form and has talent, but had extra matches in qualifying and had to save 10 MPs against Jodie the day before, to get 29 ranking points for that is pretty generous.

I haven't got stats or anything in front of me, but I'd imagine Perez with a ranking of 214 this week would have been in Gabi's top 10 career best wins in terms of ranking.

These points will go a long way to replacing those Indian W points last December (29 of 50) and a similar run next week, or even a QF and that will be preserved and she'll still have that 180odd ranking up until about March which will allow her much more choice when planning. If the worst happens and she can't get form and slips towards 300 around mid May, she'll have plenty opportunities in the grass season to get back to where she currently is as she only won 2 100k matches in the summer - this is assuming she stays relatively healthy.

On the other hand, if there were hopes to push for the top 100 like Boulter, then yes, there will be a lot of work to do.

close 15th equal best

if she can only get a full season with no long period out for ill or injured itd be better benchmark

thing yesterday (today ? )was she was seeming angry and irittated from the very first game to the very last game and so unlike any ither time i been wathed her and because she played this aussie series a couple of times now and it has lots of streaming weve actual had a chance to see gabi play quite a lot of times so the change was real noticeable and wierd

but she back wining matches after stalling out her first few weeks of competition and a useful run but just not taken the full chance that seem to be there this week hopefully she be more like herself next time and make a similar or better run

Thanks Tom, is there a specific site you use to see those best wins?

I just saw the first set tie break but yeah, pretty much every miss she was visibly (and vocally) annoyed.
