Good win for Eden though. 7-6 6-4.

Well done Eden. The single point for getting through the first round won't affect her total though as she has several other one-pointers. But any further progress will count.

Eden has Lou Adler, who has lost to Emily Ap and Lissey (and exchanged wins with Tiff) recently, or a WC next up so you'd think she should be a clear favourite to add to that, especially as decent form of late. The WC is Yasmine Mansouri, but I don't know much about her.

Good chance that Mansouri beats Adler. Yasmine is a very good junior, a little inconsistent but very much on the way up. Whereas Lou is very fairly ranked at 650 or whatever she is now - a 'journeyman' sort of player.

Eden's potential opponents have exchanged 6-3 sets, just gone into a decider.

Adler had to save 3 MPs in her match at *4-5, but came through 7-5 in the end.

Heather must have been a late withdrawal.

I was just about to say similar, it's crazy strong 0- I've seen far weaker WTA internationals (ahem Nanchang).

Take 2nd seed Kuzmova for example, she is on the brink of the top 50 so would be hoping for a deep run here, but a potential path for her would be Rus-Ferro-Rodina(all either in or on the brink of top 100)-Maria-Parmentier. There's certainly no easing into that.

It is surprising to see the high-ranked players in the draw, I would expect the WR90+ players trying to grab a few points to ensure their places in the AO main draw, but not those already sure of entry. But it is the only tournament in Europe above 25k this week now that the WTA season has finished.
