Week 41 - Challenger (€64,000) - Val Gardena, Südtirol (Ortisei/Urtijëi), Italy (hard) - doubles

L16:  (1) Luke Bambridge & Jonny O'Mara CR 153 (68+85) vs Fabrice Martin & Julian Ocleppo (FRA/ITA) CR 263 (73+190)

That could be a close one.

I was wondering what the deal was with Luke and Jonny. They.seemed to be giving it a go, then had quite an early break and now playing again. Was it just pragmatic to get into events or due to some other factor? I wonder if bob got any insights in his chats with Jonny last week?

I think you mean 263 for the joint ranking of the opponents! Confused me for a second.

Evo briefly indicated in a chat with Mike Cation during a commentary a little while ago that Luke and Jonny had "split". How much truth there was in that at the time I guess someone here knows ...

So, asking the question without putting you too much on the spot. Do you think we will see more  of Bambo and Jonny together going forwards or will this just be an odd couple of weeks?

To be honest, the discussion was more general.  I didn't specifically ask about Jonny's long term plans and whether pairing up with Luke was a more permanent option.  I simply commented that there seemed to be an inordinate amount of partner swapping between the up and coming Brits at the moment.  Jonny agreed that the situation was becoming ridiculous but also added that he saw the merry-go-round continuing.  From that, I deduced that the partnership was not necessarily a long term permanent one, but that they may still team up from time to time - but as I said, that was just my deduction.

Thanks bob. Makes sense at the level they are at to have options. When they start to get to tour level a regular go to partner becomes more vital

I remember Luke on Mike Cations podcast. He said in doubles you have to be prepared to be a bit of a dick or words to that affect. I think he was referring to Partners. I guess the problem is that while trying to rise the rankings if your partnering with someone of equal ranking it will be hard to step up a level to enter higher tournaments. I guess you have to be prepared to drop your partner if the option to partner someone with a higher rank in higher level tournament comes up, that with your regular partner you wouldnt gain entry to. I guess doing this should help you rise the rankings quicker than rising as a pair.

Yes, I have got the impression before that Luke is perhaps a bit of a "player" in the partner swapping game and certainly ambitious, which in itself is of course neither wrong nor unusual. He is prepared to be a "dick".

Sounds as if Jonny prefers more stability.

Agreed - at Challenger level it's about catching the waves, the right partner as needed to maximise points and jump up. At tour level, if you sustain it, you can probably more easily stop with one partner for a while, particularly as you aim at tour finals etc. Around this time of year many pairings not challenging for tour finals start to swap and change as well.

Different strategies I guess.

Anyone interested in the podcast that I'm referring to: mikecation.podbean.com/e/the-coffee-cast-with-cation-luke-bambridge-edition/

Yeah, it was a really good interview with Luke. Have any other brits been featured on Mike cation podcasts?

Both Liam and Dan Evans spring to mind and there may have been others.
