Maia now seems to have got her 2nd serve working well in set 2 and after a couple of service games both 1st and 2nd serves seem to have improved in set 3.

Maia seemingly cruising at 5-0 - now back to 5-2. Great fight by both these girls. Wish we could watch it.

Yes indeed it seems to have been quite an astonishing match in many respects. So Maia, after being 2 MPs down in that second set pulls it out the fire - but not before Eden after being down 0-5 in that last set, pulled it back to 3-5 and had GPs to bring it back on serve.

Edit: In fact Eden had a whole 5 BPs in that final service game of Maia's, with Maia eventually winning on her 2nd MP!

Well done Maia - I didn't think she was going to turn that round after I looked at the stats from the early part of the match.

I think that's Maia's best points tally since Glasgow in January, so good to see her back performing well again. And with two home based tournaments to come, hopefully she can retain a top 400 ranking into next year. Not discounting more to come here as well possibly....

It's those serving stats that Peter quotes that Maia has to work on - much more of the 3rd set, and much less of the 1st set! Her game tends to lack any real strong points, other than her all round tenacity, so she needs a serve that does offer her some easier points - rather like Gabi in that regard.

Tan had a very good run at RG, getting through to the final QR. Good money, good points.

She then lost in the first round of the next eight tournaments she played (one was the US Open, true, and she'd won the wildcard tournament to get there. But there were seven others events, several of them just 25ks).

And now she's had a decent run here. Not a great set of results overall though....

As people know, I'm not a major fan of Harmony's (although that's mainly in light of all the hype there was about her as youngster, she's certainly a decent enough player. But she's 21 now and about 350 or so, which bears out my scepticism, as the powers-would-be had it that she'd be top 100 by now).

However, I'm not a major fan of Maia's tennis either (can't see the comparisons to Katie B at all, even 3 or 4 years ago, which is the age I have a punt - Maia has good ball skills but she stands so much further back to hit the ball, and has such a rounded trajectory most of the time, that it's very difficult for her to impose herself). However, I do like her scuttling, dogged approach, and she reads the game well (as said, decent ball skills and match-play skills). Played a truly dire match at the Wimbly qualis this year though.

Will be interesting to see how the unranked 2001-born French girl does in the other semi-final. She also has had a lot of publicity over her teenage years.
