Week 40 - WTA Premier Mandatory ($8.3M) - Beijing, China Hard

Second set went away from Katie and she lost it 2-6. She did save 4 set points but and would have been nice if she held to serve first in the decider but not to be. Thinkers a bit of both in terms of respective levels increasing and dipping.

6-4 2-6 0-0*

Long way back now. 1-3*. Katie saved 3 consecutive BPs from 0-40, but at deuce put an easy volley long under minimal pressure and was then promptly broken.

Flipkens serving a lot better now so it will be tough to break 15-40*

Wow, Katie does break back from 15-40 down and Flipkens only has one challenge remaining relatively early which could come back to haunt her.

*2-3

5-5*. Tense stuff. Katie has done so well to get back into this set after being on the brink of 1-4 down. Would love to see her pull it off.

Katie had a but of an opening there at 30-15 but good serving pulled Flipkens through the game.

MP Flipkens. Boulter put a makeable shot just wide.

Saved. Great 2nd serve.

40-40.

DF gives the Belgian another MP.

Saved, but another DF means sane situation. She just can't get that first serve in now.

Flipkens takes the 3rd MP. 6-4 2-6 5-7. Shame but good fight from Katie in the 3rd and was competing well generally.

Tianjin quallies next unless she can sneak in the draw as she was 2nd on the list.

Gutted for Katie but it's so good to see her competitive at this level already.

I'm sure she'll be safely top 100 before years end.

Katie has a 25k F and SF to defend before the end of the year (48 points). She is playing WTA Tianjin quallies next week and then has a China 100k event the following week where she will probably be seeded. Not sure what her plans are after that, but there are other 60k events in China plus the 125k events that Naomi did pretty well in last year, so hopefully she can do enough to secure top 100 place by the end of November and thus more than likely direct entry into the Aussie Open.
