Not surprised - a bit rich for her blood. Will be interesting how she deals with rest of the year.

Interesting that Emilie got into this Q draw just before her ranking kicks in. She was at the bottom of the Alt list, #65 from the start of the q list, in a 32 person q draw. Either she turned up for the q draw and got lucky... or she had a good indication she would get in, despite her not having a WC. I know she is based in Spain, but i don't know where in it.

She would have checked with the tournament referee who would have a good idea who was likely to turn up. Most players have the courtesy to advised or are contacted to check.

She is based in Denia, 100km south of Valencia. About an hours drive.

Edit: I think as she had entered, she could have signed in by telephone. I think it's just on site alts that have to sign in in person.

Thanks RS that's good to know. I couldn't seen any information online as to where she might be based, but had a feeling she might be in or near Valencia. Emilie hasn't played in a 25k before, never mind a 60k, so it seemed the fact she was entering and actually getting in meant she was based in the locale. Her draw is tough naturally, but any wins equals points and will be a good test for her.

Third match on court 4, following two matches involving seeds. Play just starting, so could be a couple of hours time.

Emilie leads 4-2*, having just held serve in an extremely long game - over 30 points.

Served for the set at *5-4, but was broken.

*5-6

Hmm and Emilie had a chance to serve for the first set at *5-3 but lost it to 30. Now at 5-5. This has been very close so far, a great performance from Emilie, not at all overawed or outplayed by the WR 553 thus far.

Sadly Emilie after having 2 GPs and defending 1 SP then fails to hold her next service game too, and loses the first set 5-7 in 1 hr 26 mins.

Brave attempt by Emilie, but after losing that extremely tight first set, asking her to come back from that was unlikely. Still a 2 hrs 21 mins display shows she was neither outclassed nor out of depth at this level. Now that she will have her ranking from Monday, and so can enter tournaments more easily, I look forward to seeing what she can achieve in the coming months, including the securing of her ranking into the coming year.

Victoria Chiesa Retweeted El Mundo CValenciana

This is cool: all of the umpires (and ball people on the main court & head physio) at the ITF $60,000 event in Valencia this week (where Medina Garrigues is tournament director) are women.

AMG says they want to showcase the quantity & abilities of women in tennis & female umps.

I can't for the life of me see how this isn't discrimination.

Very much uncool, in my eyes.

I wouldn't call it political correctness, more the opposite, and it doesn't seem that bright an idea when so many women are looking for more equality and inclusiveness.
