Week 39 - ITF ($15K) - Melilla, Spain - Clay

Somehow Alice has conspired to lose the first set 6-7(5). She was 5-2 up and when serving at 5-4 had 4 SPs that she failed to take. In the TB she then went 1-6 down, pulled it back to 5-6, and then lost the next point.

The results turned out rather as expected. Interesting match for Ali up next. Her opponent has no junior or senior record but put out the WR 804 today, so obviously has something to her game. Nevertheless it's a good opportunity for Ali to progress further and I am still going to go with her.

R32: Ali COLLINS (GBR) UNR 18yrs (JCH:64 Jan 18) beat Keira BLACKBEARD (CAN) UNR 15yrs (JCH:298 Jan 18) 6-1 6-2
R32: Alice GILLAN (GBR) [7] 1033 lost to Julia PAYOLA (ESP) 1075 (CH:778 Nov 14) 6-7(5) 1-6

R16: Ali COLLINS (GBR) UNR 18yrs (JCH:64 Jan 18) vs Marina BENITO (ESP) UNR 18yrs

Ms Benito has got something about her. Ali Collins lost the first set to her 4-6, and although Ali pulled it back level at 4-4, she was always trailing in the set on points and on serve. She won only 2/5 of her service games, with only a 44% win on her first serve proving particularly damaging.

Has started the second serve with a break, so maybe can be on the front foot more in this set. 4-6 *1-0

Wow, this has become an intriguing battle. Pity it's not live. The clock is not showing, but the match can't be much short of 2 hrs now, as Ali, after serving twice for the second set and failing on both occasions (without even a SP on either service game), then wins the TB easily to extend the match into the third set. Now it's who has the most stamina. 4-6 7-6(1)

It was 1 hour 46 for the first two sets - time shows in the stats for the individual sets.

Well, in the end it was Benito that had the stamina. Only 1 service game held in the final set was not enough for Ali. I thought Ali would have the edge here, but credit to Benito for her resilient performance.

Ali did put up quite a fight from 1-4 down - three very long games. Pity, but still a good performance.
