Title IX was brought in because of the huge bias in sporting scholarships due to the large rosters of football and baseball so it would be nonsense to remove those from the equation. It was designed to force universities to invest in women's sport and to allow women an equal chance of a sporting scholarship. In poorer communities in the States this can be the difference between going to uni or not - everyone can get a student loan but the scale of the fees and other expenses to be repaid can be off the scale. It was never designed for parity within individual sports just parity across an entire athletics department.
It is interesting that there is very little difference in the numbe4 of men and women going to the US despite that there are many more tennis scholarships on offer for women. There is a difference in the number in strong power conference tennis programmes, some very strong girls likely to play in the high slots in time getting places at Oregon, Texas Tech, Florida State, South Carolina and Rice (competitive but not quite so strong but much more academic). The boys getting places at TCU and South Carolina. Gonzaga have recruited well so it will be interesting to see whether they make the NCAAs and how they do.

Thought I would include the qualies and earlier rounds, as many of the college men featured in them and some of the draws were pretty tough. Imagine meeting Marcus Walters in the first rounds of the qaulies!
Those with a 2.2 rating (been out of the country) eg Joe Wooley (Utah) were on the reserve list......The introduction of a world tennis number should (will?) include college matches, so those who have been in the US will have a more appropriate ranking/rating when back home

I don;t know if you were only starting from QFs onwards (which is reasonable, Elegant Point).
But we also had other US college lad successes in R1 of a 25k, which isn't too bad, with wins for people like Joe Tyler, Marcus Walters and Dan Little (I think Dan is still in school, just possible he's graduated)
And, of course, ones like Ewan Moore winning the doubles title (with Ali Gray).
(Not to mention all the ex-college players, who had a great week last week)
Some of the men come back - mostly the women don't - bit of a one-way-street
It's a fair point.
But just to focus on the positives, Holly Hutchinson and Nell Miller have both beaten seeds in the 25k qualis this morning. ANd play off against each other for a MD place. Which is great to see.
Add: and bragging rights go to Holly, who is into the MD of the 25k - well done!

No update from Brit tour Newcastle today - assuming the weather is poor?
With many of the college players already back in the US and a number of withdrawals from the tournament including Ed Corrie, the draw is not looking quite as strong. Also withdrawn are Dan Little & Joe Woolley both of whom are allegedly going to do post grad courses at Nottingham Uni. adding to the Notts team.

Always impressed by Sean Hodkin who has come the domestic non college, non junior ITF route. Obviously good enough for an elite US power conference tennis scholarship, I just wonder where he would be now had the route been an option for him. Jo Wooley another Lincolnshire county player appeared to have got a lot out of his time at Utah. Saw him playing a bit and for them and he was very much part of the glue of the team, NB Jo generally played his singles in the 5/6 slot sometimes only doubles, so good to see him get a win on the Brit tour. Dan Little did outstandingly well at Utah from a development perspective, establishing himself in the no 1 slot in a tough conference playing some of the best college players nationally regularly. Only Jubby did that last year of our other male college players.
Interesting point about the girls not coming back to play, I think that may just reflect how much harder it is for the boys to get scholarships (many fewer offered), partly based on an assumption that most of the boys are on a free ride implying much more of a focus on competitive tennis as the rational for going as opposed to the overall educational/ athletic package.

Louisville fires veteran men's tennis coach Rex Ecarma after independent investigation
Interesting article - there have been a few Brits at Louisville over the years. I know of at least one who went there on a full scholarship & left very quickly.......... :0(
