Girard was JWR 128 when age 17 and got to an adult high of 800 or so when still a junior. Was thought of very highly. Comes from the Reunion Iles, I think.
But it's all gone a bit pear-shaped more recently (she's only 19 now) and I'm not quite sure why ..... not a standard UNR though......

if Anna can beat Girard it's a 3rd counter and a ranking.

Anna is engaged in a huge battle here with Girard. They've been 2hrs 36 mins so far, for just two sets, one apiece by the same margin 6-7(6) 7-6(6)

If Anna can hold on in the third set, this will be her third counter, so she will also gain a ranking...

Anna 6-7(6) 7-6(6)

4 breaks in total for each. Each served for the set they lost at 5-4. So Anna broke back to stay in it.

There's been an MTO in this match, with Anna leading *3-2

Hmm it would be unfortunate if the MTO was for Anna, but I suspect it was. At 3-1* up in the final set things looked promising but that was as good as it got for her, as she then lost the last five games in a row. It wouldn't surprise therefore, and would explain the sudden fall away at the end, if she was physically impaired in those latter stages. cry

R1: POPESCU, Anna (GBR) WC UNR lost to GIRARD, Emmanuelle (FRA) UNR 6-7(6) 7-6(6) 3-6

Yes, but also just as possible it was for Girard who was losing and knew she needed a break and some massage and some pain-killers etc. to get her back in shape, both physically and mentally.

Whatever, it was a shame for Anna.....

Yes that's certainly possible too. Whichever way it was the match certainly turned around the MTO. Up to that point there had been no significant run of games through the entire match, after it Anna did not win another game.
