i've watched a few of both their matches on the livestreams and although he has won a fair amount of matches Ward has looked lacklustre and flat whereas when he has been firing Dan has been playing some very nice tennis
Given everything that has happened about Dan this is another positive post ban thing for him to be involved in. I think it's good to get people away from the ban and focus on the tennis and his role as part of the GB team.
Dan's also been picked because at his very best, Leon knows he's capable of producing a higher level than Wardy. It's like when Leon picked Dan over Jamie Baker back in 2013 - although Dan had yet to show his potential, he'd won a challenger in the past and Leon knew his best level was higher than Jamie's
Dan has been top 50 and scored wins over players like Cilic, Zverev, Dolgopolov, in best of five set encounters, as well as making the last 16 of a slam. Came within a point of knocking eventual champ Wawrinka out of the 2016 US Open.
While he beat both Querrey and Isner in Davis Cup, even at his very best, Wardy has never reached Dan's level.
L16: James Ward WR 247 defeated Tallon Griekspoor (NED) WR 187 by 7-6(1) 3-6 6-3
QF: James Ward WR 247 vs Oscar Otte (GER) WR 183 (CH = 129 last October)
That ain't going to be easy.
Otte beat jay clarke 6-2 6-2 in Cherbourg in February so , yes, could be tough competition for James
Otte's hard court results have been poor this year, he seems to prefer the dirt, but strangely he got to the final at Surbiton. On paper this match is quite winnable for James. He is 3rd match, with play starting at 11:00 local.
