Week 35 & 36 - US Open New York, USA - Hard

She can play 1 International in each half of the year plus a third if certain conditions are met. She hasn't played an international in this half of the year.

From Roland Garros 2015 to Melbourne 2017, we had 8 consecutive Slams with a player in R64 or better; the best run in the last decade. Of the last 7 Slams, we've only managed it on three occasions.
At the moment, it's a bit hard to see a Brit winning a round at AO'19, exceptional draws aside.
For a lot of our players, this final third of the season is going to be absolutely crucial, for so many different reasons.

Keep the faith Johanna. PaulM's schedule notes are duly noted. She probably has to use her top 10 commitment privileges whilst she still can though - it would be hard to turn down the chances in the big tournaments, but I tend to agree that an International might do her the world of good right now. Pretty sure she could still play one more International if she wanted to.

Not been great here but I think that's veering to the too pessimistic. Jo herself for starters must still have a very decent chance, indeed more likely than not, without needing some exceptional draw.

The rest, well we should have a good number in qualifying again, with Katie B and Heather possibly MD entrants, mostly younger players generally on the up, quite a few of whom had not the greatest of lead ins to the US Open partly through misfortune with Landisville for starters. Yes an important final part of the season ( not sure about absolutely crucial? ) to see some of them get their mojo back. That would hopefully lead to more optimism for the Aussie Open.

I looks as if conditions were challenging today with several players being forced to resign.

26 seeds survive round one. V different to the carnage of Wimbledon from what my short memory remembers

Only one retirement in the women's - just in the last game.

All the others from the men's side. (Love the idea of Novak and Fucsovics jumping naked into an ice bath together in their ten minute break before the fourth set)

Shame for Jo that she drew Garcia. I thought she wasn't playing too badly, in fact, in the first set - certainly at the beginning. The heat was always going to tell on her more but she was hitting it well at the start. An easier opponent might have seen her race into a quick lead, playing like that, and wrap at least the first set up. But a hot, humid New York is horrible, probably best not to kill yourself and just back out, they'll be other tournaments.

Hello Barefoot!

We've all said that so many times before, there doesn't seem much point in saying it any longer... It goes for granted now that she should be doing that, but the way Jo works, I don't expect her to make a change until the end of the season now. There's another reason why she may not - she has only 10 more points to lose this year, so her ranking can't fall much further. Also there may not be many decent coaches available at this time of the year. However, she really does need to be set up differently by the beginning of next season and I hope to heavens she has made a decent change by then so she can look forward to a better 2019. Of course, the sooner the change the better and I'd love her to break stereotypes, but it doesn't seem the Jo pattern that it would happen now.

I think the fact that Jo was ill before the US Open and the heat were the main  factors for  her defeat Can't blame the coach for that. Just bad luck..

Eurosport might not be available in UK  but English Eurosport is available in Lithuania so able to enjoy Mats and Barbara and match commentary in English.

Yes, remarkable non carnage in R1. (1) Halep is the only one of the top 20 seeds out. (21) Buzarnescu withdrew before the start and the next highest seed beaten was (24) Vandeweghe.

25 of the men's seeds survive with the highest seeds losing being (8) Dimitrov then (16) Kyle.

Jo certainly doesn't look like she is giving up on Joyce just yet. And she does mention the heat... says her eyes were burning!

It had passed me by that the US Open had seeded Serena at 17, 9 places up from her WR 26, owing to her pregnancy absence. Pregnancy is now apparently an issue with them whereas I can't remember anything else deviating them from the rankings.

Well that meant she could be bracketed with Venus for the L32, the draw then put that as on if they both won their first 2 matches and the US Open ended with what it probably didn't really want, a Williams L32 meeting.

Serena duly won 6-1 6-2 in what seems to have been a less than classic match.

There are decent arguments for always just keeping to the rankings for seedings, including Wimbledon.

So an American player won the title last year (Sloane), with another American in the final (Madison).

And this year we've got two Americans in the semis and one player who has lived in the US since the age of 3, done all her tennis there, and has American nationality (along with Japanese).

Everyone thinks of Serena, but the US women overall really have quite a stranglehold on this competition at the moment.

Osaka herself says she's Japanese, and more Haitian (her fathers nationallity) than American.
By this token, Hev & Laura, being based in Florida most their lives, are also American, which they're not; Andy was Spanish etc.
I don't think it behoves us well to start suggetsing otherwise than the correct nationality on this issue, for any players, for any associated nationalities of residence.
