Week 35 & 36 - US Open New York, USA - Hard

Garcias outfit a great design for the heat in my opinion. Jos is sticking to her already.

The Heat Rule is in place for both men and women.

Andy picked her as being a future no.1

SHe's been really tetchy on court the last few week, beating herself. I was hoping if Jo could keep it close, then that would come out again like it did in Motreal, Cincinnati & New Haven, and Jo could exploit it.

But Caro seems OK today, and Jo's record from a set down in 2018 is 4-11 though one of those was recently against a top player

Can't see much optimism for a turnaround, but if Jo hits decent form somehow, from somewhere, she can certainly do it. Realistically though...

2-6 *1-2

This is just too big an ask. Jo needed a bit of help with the draw here to continue the upward tick but didn't get it.

I hope she schedules smart through the rest of the year and doesn't just play the biggest event going each week

And obviously the illness, which did seem to be quite bad, isn't great prep to play in these conditions either

Basically her entire game broke down. Couldn't buy a first serve, both wings shaky. Outplayed.

6-2 6-2

Thought it might be closer to be honest.

She needs to play a few Internationals but it looks like she's doing Tokyo and Wuhan where she's basically the lowest ranked direct entrant and pretty much guaranteed to have a top 30 opponent rather than the other options those weeks where she'd be a top 4 seed.

I think that's bad planning personally. Her focus should be being seeded for Melbourne and that schedule isn't going to achieve it.

Doesn't look like a good day, but if she was sick previously then wouldn't want to read too much into it....

Hi all. I don't think she can play many/any more Internationals - she has top 10 status from last year still so may have to tough it out.

Does she not have to play most of the top tournaments as a Top 10 Commitment Player ? Without looking it all up I can't remember which ones though.
Mladenovic and Vandeweghe are also in that position - and will be even lower ranked. (25 and 53 official, 47 and 48 live)

From Roland Garros 2015 to Melbourne 2017, we had 8 consecutive Slams with a player in R64 or better; the best run in the last decade. Of the last 7 Slams, we've only managed it on three occasions.
At the moment, it's a bit hard to see a Brit winning a round at AO'19, exceptional draws aside.
For a lot of our players, this final third of the season is going to be absolutely crucial, for so many different reasons.

Keep the faith Johanna. PaulM's schedule notes are duly noted. She probably has to use her top 10 commitment privileges whilst she still can though - it would be hard to turn down the chances in the big tournaments, but I tend to agree that an International might do her the world of good right now. Pretty sure she could still play one more International if she wanted to.

She's only played the one International this year (Nottingham) she's allowed another... I think, but am too depressed to look through the WTA rulebook right now.
