Often in Heather's career when she goes out of a big event like this, there's a slump of spirit, and often form, that follows for a few weeks at least.
Whoever is advising, coaching and managing her at the moment needs to get to that now, and stop it, somehow, because the form is up, and just keep at it and something good could really happen.
Next week in Chicago is a great chance to continue the uptick. The field is shaping up to be quite strong, but quite even. In this form, Heather could make it through qualifying and win main draw matches. Building again on Vancouver and qualifiction in Flushing Meadows, and making a useful springboard from which to approach Asia.
Got to keep that head up though, don't let the improvement melt away in lingering disappointments from today.

She's in doubles with a very winnable R1 match

Jo's match is 3rd match on Grandstand, after Osaka and Cilic.

Amazon Prime really is rather rubbish isnt it. It feels like tv coverage has gone back a decade

Did anyone else have different commentators on Andys match depending on what format you logged in with? On my TV it was an American and South African team and on the phone it was Petch and co. Also on Andys match the camera was initially too far away and then towards the end they started using a close up behind the player view meaning it was a struggle to see the other end. Its all very poor really, streaming services  kill this sport from an armchair point of view.

I had the same commentary all the way through (Petch).

You can't blame Amazon for the crazy camera position on the new court!!

I am very impressed so far

I was lucky enough to be there yesterday. I saw a set and a half of Heather and about the same for Kyle.

I have to say I was surprised by Heather, and not in an entirely positive way. As I say, I only saw the first set and the first few games of the second (so take of that what you will) but when the ball was not in play, there wasn't a lot of positive body language. There was a lot of leg slapping (a sort of "oh, here we go again"). Didn't seem like the fiesty, fighting plyer we all fell in love with. I did try and gee her up but clearly my "c'mon Hev!" didn't do the trick!

That said, she clearly can still strike a lovely ball and there were many moments she was bossing the point but missed the final shot. Clearly a confidence thing. I'm not sure what's going on with her coaching but she really is at do something different or fade point in her career. I hope she can make some changes and get it together. She's a great personality to have around and much better than her current ranking.

This could go under either mens or women's, but just to note the attendance yesterday of 67,832 was a record for a single day. Quite a stunning crowd. Interesting though as the courts I saw looked less than full. Is there some arsenal fc style crowd accounting going on or are the grounds so vast that the crowds effectively got lost?

The grounds are vast. Several massive stadia and even small stands for outside courts. There are also day and night sessions, so you may not have 67k people there all at the same time IYSWIM. But also its quite a transient crowd. People tend to wander in and out of matches, sometimes even in the middle of a point. The Marshalls are a lot less strict than over here. That said its a great day out if you can get there. Really good value as you can see some great tennis. Its only the main Arthur Ashe (?) Court that has wholly reserved seating, the other courts have a fair amount of unreserved seats.

It's a bit weird considering the new Armstrong stadium capacity is actually reduced by 4,000 over the previous version.
There'll always be some falsification in US sports to make it "biggest, best, worlds greatest" etc, like the Chinese giving away thousands of tickets to boost attendance at the Olympics for the same purpose, that endless p*ssing competition folks seem to love so much. Does attendance mean full price paying customers, or just people that were in the grounds, or some such sleight of the details. If they are classified as full paying customers then were the prices reduced to peppercorn rates for a number etc. If someone goes out, and re-enters on the same ticket, do they count them twice? All examples that US sports use pretty routinely in various combinations in order to creatively fluff their importance. No one cares, so why not. Just like no one in US sports generally really cares about doping, so why not, and you get the baseball and American football normalised steroid regimes which punters actually like as it generates the superheros, the Mark McGwires & Barry Bonds that US punters crave?

What is true is that they have the biggest grounds and potential maximum capacity of any Slam by a wide margin, as Nix mentions.

Yeah, I can already see you all shaking your heads...

Thanks both - yes it was mentioned the daytime crowd of 40k was a record and the evening of 27k from memory also for a night time, 67k being the combined attendance. Doing some maths, they may get close to 800k total over the event, in itself pretty big.

Re sleight of hand, yes, hence why I mentioned arsenal fc!

Jo's match about to start. I am cautiously optimistic . I think it's great they didn't have the protracted wait to get on court that may well have ensued if Cilic had lost the first set, which it look like he was going to. In fact it's very often the case the Marin's matches are long ones so I was expecting a long wait really. Lets see. Good luck Jo.

Not so sure how keen Jo will be to get playing in 34C heat ( and that's just showing as the general New York temperature as opposed to on court ).

I've heard her say she likes it hot but I've seen her looking very uncomfortable in heat.

All the best to her.
