Don't think this is going to last too much longer sadly. She is scrapping away and fighting hard but Makarova isn't dropping her level and is just a bit too good so far today
*1-3
Shame she didn't get Jakupovic who was dreadful against Teichmann
Well that break rather changed things didn't it? Heather stayed nice and solid, Makarova went off the boil, and our girl stayed calm and took her opportunities in the rallies nicely
The umpire in this match has twice overruled only to have her overrules successfully challenged. Makes you understand why players get so irate when no Hawkeye available.
She will be disappointed by the result but I think that was such a positive performance from Heather.
She played a consistently high level, and while Makarova dipped, she had just enough in the end to dig into to take the third.
The game at 2-4* was fantastic, Heather played some cracking tennis, and whilst obviously that was a chance to break back, to be honest they were well saved.
More tennis like this and Hev will be climbing back up the rankings week by week over the rest of 2017. Hope she can keep it up.

Often in Heather's career when she goes out of a big event like this, there's a slump of spirit, and often form, that follows for a few weeks at least.
Whoever is advising, coaching and managing her at the moment needs to get to that now, and stop it, somehow, because the form is up, and just keep at it and something good could really happen.
Next week in Chicago is a great chance to continue the uptick. The field is shaping up to be quite strong, but quite even. In this form, Heather could make it through qualifying and win main draw matches. Building again on Vancouver and qualifiction in Flushing Meadows, and making a useful springboard from which to approach Asia.
Got to keep that head up though, don't let the improvement melt away in lingering disappointments from today.
