Speculation as to if Kyle has had glandular fever (seems awfully prevalent in tennis players?) (From post presser Twitter comments)

In the Daily Fail, and others, Kyle claiming that it's not glandular fever but a 'recurring viral illness' and it's lingering effects.

Either way, and maybe he would have lost whatever, but hope he's OK.

As I do for poor Felix A-A - a truly super young talent but who has 'heart issues' (probably tachycardia) and was forced to stop (immediately!) yesterday. All the best, young man.

Meanwhile, Andy and Cam got through, which is worth a big smile biggrin

Re: so could actually be glandular fever then but without actually specifying it.

Although Thiem had something like that recently so maybe it's whatever he had

Anyway, there's certainly something(s) not right.

Recent big defeats, Bob's concern about him in the match against Shapovalov when he evidently was getting really short of breath and seemed to want to shorten points as much as possible, etc.

Not saying he couldn't play better but if he hasn't already he needs thoroughly checked out. And they need to get to the bottom of why he has so cramped again. All may be linked, who knows ...

Sadly it brings back memories of when Kyle had that mystery debilitating illness that in the end saw him hospitalized and taking a full three months off.  Not saying this is the same thing, but I don't think he has been fit since Wimbledon.  Something it definitely not right.

My fears about the mystery illness have been heightened this morning after reading this.  I know how much it took out of him last time and I know how long it took him to recover.  It certainly explains the lackluster hard court season.

Kyle could do with missing DC now, particularly as the result is basically irrelevant.  He needs to take some time out.  I would withdraw from the Laver cup too, if I were him.

As for whether it is glandular fever, all I can say is that the first time round, Kyle had the tests for this illness and they came back negative.  To this day, nobody knows what the illness was exactly.

I really think the DC should be scrapped altogether anyway. I have interest at all in it, very little when we won it. A version at the Olympics would be adequate every 4 years whereby its open to all players would be ideal.

I agree Kyle should miss this and Laver Cup, if his health is a genuine concern. I am also not really sure of the point of this anymore, but  given it will happen and no doubt the players will want to try and win on home turf, I suspect we may end up with Cam and Jay playing singles, Andy and Jamie playing doubles and why not give Joe a run as 5th man?

Cant see them picking Dan at all as I have said before and not sure it is right for Dan - he should accumulate more points on the Tour if he can and same for James Ward.

Just reading that this was Ferrer's last Grand Slam event - great that he played with Rafa on a big stage, sad that he had to retire injured. I always liked Ferrer's heart, he maximised his career I feel and hope he has a good retirement. I imagine he is the type of guy that will make a good coach, so hope we see him pop up somewhere else in the game

Not only the last slam for Ferrer but also Julien Benneteau, Florian Mayer, Gilles Muller and Mikhail Youzhny.

Ferrer is still playing early next year, he plans to play his last tournament in Spain in front of a home crowd.

Yes, sad to see him go out this way. I always felt sorry for him, he's a great player and person, and has always been in Rafa's shadow.

So it's true.  Energizer bunnies do eventually run out of juice.  Ferrer has been an inspiration to so many with an unbelievable work ethic.  Tennis will be poorer without him but I am glad he will get a last Hurrah in front of home crowds at either Barcelona or Madrid.  I might even be tempted to pop along myself.

Don't know about the others but Youzhny is hoping to bow out in St Petersburg in September.

As leafster has pointed out, Youzhny plans to play in St Petersburg as his last tournament.

Benneteau, Mayer and Muller - I think that may have been it for them. Ferrer as far as I know (and now can't find where I found it) plans to play Hopman Cup a few other tournaments and retire at Madrid (I think!) tournament. I got this particular info from this twitter account: https://twitter.com/hotdog6969 which is UK based...likes challengers.

Four retirements already today in the men's.

No wonder with the weather.

Makes Kyle look quite good to have even managed to finish his match.
