It may have been back in the 80's I recall I think it was pat cash winning a semi, maybe against wilander or mcenroe in 5 sets on the Saturday night as part of super Saturday and then headed out to play lendl in a five set final the next afternoon. Mid 80s. Crazy
No, it was much more recent than that, last 7 years or so cos it was someone who is currently playing (from memory). Or I'm getting old and the years have just mushed into one!
According to wiki - "For the second year running, the US Open is scheduled across 14 days, rather than the 15-day schedule of 2013 and 2014, which has impact on all senior events."
Also, the 2018 edition will be the last slam with 32 seeds :(
Just looked at the tournament schedule and noticed they've got a more traditional structure of rounds one today and Tuesday and so on, mens semis on the Friday instead of super Saturday. They used to play first round over 3 days of course.
Maybe I missed a change last year, but I have to say I much prefer, following the event, the new structure ( or traditional one for slams), much easier to see event unfold
They had to change it, I can't quite remember, but a few years back, it spilled over onto the following Monday because they insisted on Super Saturday, and they got loads of grief. Not sure when it changed to this format though.
Between 2008 and 2012, the final was played on Monday due to rain delays. In 2013 and 2014, the final was scheduled for Monday to give the players an extra day's rest between the SF and final. In 2015 they moved the final back to Sunday, with the Men's SF on Friday and the first round over 2 days.
Possible Kyrgios Federer 3rd round clash if Nick can summon the enthusiasm to play the first two rounds to his ability. Anyway paid my £7.99 to Amazon and will be interested to see the quality of their coverage.
