Match of first round for me is shapo v FAA. Exciting match up.

Nadal v ferrer one for old times, ditto Lopez v verdasco

Real shame for the Canadians, though - their forum must be tearing their hair out - their two young hot stars drawn together in R1.....

(And, yes, the Spanish are drawn together too but there's tons more of them and it's not their new young guns ....)

  • Jaume Munar (21 years old)            ranked 85
  • Pedro Martinez (21)                                   181
  • Carlos Taberner (21)                                  217
  • Mario Vilella Martinez (23)                          245
  • Bernabe Zapata Miralles (21)                      276

not much considering the conveyer belt they've had in the last 20 years

To which you should probably add (although not US Open quali level yet) the following juniors:

Carlos LOPEZ MONTAGUD, born 2000 - JWR 13 (CH 11) - ATP 900

Nicolas ALVAREZ VARONA, born 2001 - JWR 31 (CH 21) - ATP 1351 (CH 1036)

Carlos ALCARAZ GARFIA, born 2003 - JWR 117 - ATP 1443

There are only a handful of others in the age range of 22 - 29 as well - quite a gap between the over 30's and the 21 and unders.

It is a bit unfortunate as FAA could have done a bit of damage with a decent draw as we saw in Canada (he still might), but at the same time, he has just turned 18 this month and this is his first time in a slam main draw and he'll surely be in direct soon and they have an absolute blockbuster to look forward to which is not before 5pm (EST) so the majority of Canadian's will be able to watch when back from work, but yes, they'd prefer this to have been a few rounds later.

If I was a pretty neutral Canadian then I think I'd want Shapo to win this one.

Just looked at the tournament schedule and noticed they've got a more traditional structure of rounds one today and Tuesday and so on, mens semis on the Friday instead of super Saturday. They used to play first round over 3 days of course.

Maybe I missed a change last year, but I have to say I much prefer, following the event, the new structure ( or traditional one for slams), much easier to see event unfold

They had to change it, I can't quite remember, but a few years back, it spilled over onto the following Monday because they insisted on Super Saturday, and they got loads of grief. Not sure when it changed to this format though.

Yes and previously with R1 spiliing over into Wednesday they had this thing ( still happens at Indian Wells and Miami ) of the men's rounds then being a day behind the women's rounds so every second day you had the men and women playing different rounds. Agree easier to see it all unfold, I prefer more order and symmetry

It may have been back in the 80's I recall I think it was pat cash winning a semi, maybe against wilander or mcenroe in 5 sets on the Saturday night as part of super Saturday and then headed out to play lendl in a five set final the next afternoon. Mid 80s. Crazy

Got it wrong, 1984. Lendl beat cash 7-6 in fifth. Had to play mcenroe next day. Mac had beaten connors in five also but much earlier in the day. He then thrashed a worn out lendl in the final.

Having said that 1984 was the year mcenroe played possibly the best tennis anyone has ever seen, possibly no one has matched in since ( I know folks will say djokovic in recent years but...) . So he may have thrashed lendl anyway. But the fact lendl left the court at near midnight and played a final next day is still crazy!

No, it was much more recent than that, last 7 years or so cos it was someone who is currently playing (from memory). Or I'm getting old and the years have just mushed into one!
