Weeks 35 & 36 - US Open, Flushing Meadows - Men's Singles (Hard)

Changing of the guard? Delpo is 30, and already has a US Open - doesnt that make him sort of by definition part of the current guard?

Yes, and when he won it 9 years ago he was one of 3 semi finalists that have again got to the SFs 9 years later.

Though Delpo has missed so much due to injury he's allowed to win again

Set 2 began with Djokovic missing converting 4 BPs ( now 1/9 in total ) and Nishikori missing converting 2 BPs ( his first 2 so 0/2 in total )

Djokovic leads  6-3 *1-2

At least they have a day off these days. Well the rest of Saturday if it comes to it but still essentially a day off which didn't happen for either finalist in Super Saturday days.

And final set TBs !

Could be maybe a slight prang rather than an all out car crash.

ok, so maybe I was wrong !!!!

As well as rafa (injury aside), Novak, Federer is also qualified for London finals- as a slam winner he is guaranteed top 20, delpo will also get in if he wins tomorrow

And so Djokovic beat Del Potro 6-3 7-6(4) 6-3 in a final that certainly isn't going to produce the column inches of the women's final.

From what I saw Djokovic was consistent enough and Delpo's big forehand was consistently into the net at important moments.

Not a classic of our time in spite of a commentary trying to hype it to be something it wasn't.

I think the closed roof and Argentinian football style fans created a noise that made it feel like it was something amazing, but when picked apart it wasnt really a classic as such. Definitely a battle and 3 sets coming in at over 3 hours show it was certainly tough, but not a classic.

Djoko has now won 2 slams this season. He is third in the rankings. Does that make him or Rafa (or Fed? Probably not) player of the year? Given Rafa possibly wont play again this season, Novak can probably secure the number one spot again by year end , someone with a good eye on rankings points may have a view on that

The race positions and points must at this stage be the best indicator of the end of year position and with all Djokovic's ranking points from this year and so in his race points, he is just over 1000 behind Nadal.

1. Nadal 7480
2. Djokovic 6445
3. Del Potro 4910
4. Federer 4800
5. Zverev 4365
6. Cilic 3815

If Nadal doesn't play again this year there must be a big chance that Djokovic will get the points needed to overtake him. Maybe even if Rafa does play more.

One record that does seem in danger is the lowest points total by an end of year #1 since the current points scale was introduced in 2009 - ie 10550 by Federer in that first 2009 year. Well unless Djokovic ( or yet Nadal ) goes on a kind of Murray end of season run.

Still cant get that quote function to work, how bizarre. Yes, you are right in that Race gives a good proxy. If Novak won one of the Masters events, plus got deep in the other, that would be lets say around 1200-1300 points. Maybe one of the 500 events. Cant see him playing a 250? And the year end finals, worth 1400 or thereabouts. So he could get 3000 points and a little bit more. Best case might be to win 2 Masters and 2 500 events, getting 3000 points, plus year end finals and that would just see him over the score Federer set in 2009. Cant see it though.

Novak is in the great position of having no points to defend whereas Nadal does (only 1 title - in Bejing though). Novak plays better indoors than Nadal as well.
