Weeks 35 & 36 - US Open, Flushing Meadows - Men's Singles (Hard)

See after Borna Coric (21) the next youngest player left in the L16 is Dominic Thiem who turns 25 tomorrow ( and has also now beaten Kevin Anderson to reach the QF ).

The remainder are 8 from 26 to 29 and 6 over 30s.

Another Slam fairly passing by the Next Generation.

Might well be another Slam passing by the Mid Generation too.....

And, by the by, the French are in complete meltdown at the moment. No French players, male or female, have managed to get to the QFs in any Grand Slam this year, the first time this has happened since 1980. Mega ooh-la-la-ing, hand-wringing, finger pointing, and general 'the world is ending' currently going down in the Hexagon......

Mid-gen? Dimitrov et al are known as the "lost gen". I also saw the posts about the French players...hopefully some up and comers in the works (like Humbert). Dunno what they expected with a number of players over 30 (Mahut, Monfils, Tsonga, Benneteau off the top of my head).

Their women aren't nearly as bad.

Thrilled to see Millman make it big here, getting to the last 16. Federer will almost certainly have him for breakfast now but, after the huge fairplay incident at Queens qualis, I'm a mega fan and wish him well.
He's also had tons of injuries and had to do a desk job for a while to earn some money, not knowing if he could carry on or not. Turns out for European league tennis too, no rich federation/parents making his life cushy.
Good luck to him.

Absolutely delighted for Mr Millman   There's a bit more about his trials & tribulations towards the end of this report by the Beeb.

Nadal has just beaten Thiem in a 5th set tiebreak at 2 am and just under 5 hours. Didn't see a shot but sounds brutal. Nadal v del Potro will be similar.

We need to define these generations

Old Old Gen: Federer, Kolhshreiber, Lopez, Seppi, Baghdatatis- This gen is almost done 34+

Old Gen: Nadal, Novak, Murray, Stan, Cilic, Del Potro, Tsonga, Gasquet, Berdych, Isner, Anderson, Fog 29-34 ish

Generation Useless : Goffin, Dimitrov, Roanic, Steve Johnson, Jack Sock, Swartzman, Busta, Nishikori,  26-29

Current Gen: Thiem, Edmund, Pouille, Krygios, 23-26

Next Gen:Zverev, Chung, Jarry, Khachanov, Rublev, Tsitsipas, Shapavalov, Coric, Medvedev below 23

Looks like generation useless may never win a slam in their career, as the new gen below them will soon take over.

A bit harsh to name a generation 'useless', methinks! But I might have just missed the joke. Some of the players in the Old Old Gen and the Old Gen haven't even won a grand slam , plus I don't think we can write any generation off completely, unless one has a crystal ball.

Old Old gen also contained Safin, Hewitt, Roddick and Carlos Ferrero- do not forget this.

A player born in the 90s has never won a grand slam......and it is 2018 for crying out loud!

In 2003-2008, players born in the 80s were winning 90% of grand slams.

So yes it is fair to call this generation useless. They will go down as the worst in Tennis.  The current gen and next gen will soon take over.
