Weeks 35 & 36 - US Open, Flushing Meadows - Men's Singles (Hard)

Some fantastic shotmaking in this Norrie/Lajovic match and Lajovic takes the 3rd set 6-4.

Both 2 sets to 1 down as Murray loses the third set 6-4 as well.

I wish Id just gone to bed. Despite some great tennis at times, the mouthing off and general up-tightness was something I had temporarily forgotten.

And so while all is not gloom re Andy's return and Cam's progression, it is all gloom re any further British singles action here.

L64:  Andy Murray WR 382 lost to (31) Fernando Verdasco (ESP) WR 32 (CH = 7 in April 2009) by 7-5 2-6 6-4 6-4

L64:  Cameron Norrie WR 67 lost to Dusan Lajovic (SRB) WR 62 (CH = 56 in June) by 6-2 2-6 6-4 6-4

Well, this is a wonderful morning to log onto ..... not.

Both Andy and Cam out, no dubs wins - in fact, no women and only Evo and Marshall Tutu left in singles and it's only Thursday...... :(

Verdasco was always going to trouble Andy and if he didn't, Delpo certainly would. It's all practice. Andy up to around 300 (just outside) in the rankings.

Thought some might be interested in my story on how Mario Ancic's advice has helped Novak Djokovic's revival over the past year.

"While Ancic never faced the same level of childhood peril as Djokovic who hid in basement shelters across Belgrade during the bombing of Serbia in the late 90s they share the same kinship and understanding as all players from ex-Yugoslavia who grew up during that time. A lot of the players from the Balkans have these similar experiences, Ancic explains. It was a time of war, and there were families and regions who had it tougher than others, some players were refugees back then, some had to escape and ended up representing other countries, but because of all that, in the juniors and then later on tour it was always easier for us to connect with each other. Novak and I have known each other since we were kids, playing the same events in the region.

Wow, Nadal v Khachanov was a brilliant tennis match. Must watch out for how the Russians career develops, future top 10 player for sure

Yes, looks to have been a great match. Nadal now plays the unseeded Basilashvili in the L16 ( into a Slam L16 for the first time after losing to Kyle in his previous Slam L32 match at the Australian Open ).

I see that (5) Kevin Anderson ( into the L16 for the 6th time in his last 7 Slams with 2 runners up in that, the exception being his R1 defeat to Kyle at that Aussie Open, and 14th L16 appearance in the last year 6 years ) has at about the same time seen off Shapovalov in 5 sets and now meets (9) Thiem in that top quarter.

I guess Anderson and Basilashvili ( who was in Kyle's bracket to reach the L16 ) are just lucky this time to miss an on form Kyle in their runs

Kyle currently up to 15 in the live rankings  wink

Still at 15 in the post Friday live rankings

Minor issue is that now 4 players ( Nishikori and Pouille due to play L32 matches on Saturday, and Coric and Raonic due to play L16 matches on Sunday ) are all one win away from displacing Kyle.

Khachanov, I am still not convinced on, as because he is quite new, people do not know his game yet etc, I think we will be worked out.

He just a ball basher, and quite a good one may I add. But he has no slice or chips, or anything else.

Pouille won't do it (out to Sousa) but it looks at a minimum Nishikori will.

Yes Nishikori beats Schwartzman so no rather jammy new CH for Kyle at this particular time.

Now just hope Kyle and his team can get to the root of whatever issues there have been over the last month or two and we can see him back playing much closer to his maximum capabilities.
