A lot of people try to paint a perfect picture on social media and hide reality. im not going to do that this post, as my reality recently hasnt been so perfect. ive had many mental low spells in the past but this recent one made me think and dig a little deeper, as i found it really hard to get out of. Not only made me think about getting help for the first time but also, what can i start doing to help be better? not just stop the pain in the present but also for the future, instead of trying to ignore and brush it off. Use it as something to self improve from. I believe the first thing we should look at is ourselves in times of struggle. We are responsible for the choices we make, whether to be resilient and grow as a person or bow down to whatever we have to overcome. We all go through struggle in our own ways but its our responses that define us. I hope that if this post relates to you in some way that it can help you gain strength in the fact youre never alone and you have the power to make a change for the better.
I just saw this on his Instagram account. He's obviously had tough times but is brave enough to share this.
Sadly there is a history of mental health issues in Paul's family which led to the worst possible outcome in his father's case and this puts him statistically at greater risk. Really hope he can overcome his issues and go on to enjoy the successful career that we know he's capable of.
I just read the instagram link for the first time and echo what others say, but what also struck me is the people who posted back really nasty comments to him - unbelievable.
Good luck to Paul and so glad he is doing well at the moment in tennis and better in life

Absolutely right Jon. But also some lovely comments from a lot of the British players, which is fantastic to see.

The haters gonna hate
I have always thought Paul is a great advert for achieving against the odds, wishing him every success. Would love this, young man to win a grand slam
As Paul is one of our great feelgood stories, the 'underdog' comes through, just to note that today, 12th June 2022, Paul (ATP 231) qualified for the main draw of Queens, having beaten Johnson (ATP 87) and Duckworth (ATP 71)

Wow, so pleased for him. He just comes across as such a lovely young man and so want him to do well.

Good looking wins - well done to Paul and all the best at Queens
Paul finished 2022 as GB#7. Here's some colourful graphs on how his year turned out.
So Paul's successful year saw him claim his first title at a challenger level, as well as a new CH inside the Top200. While Paul entered challenger tournaments 74% of the time (the highest amongst the Top10 (irrespective of tournament type)), when he had an opportunity to enter a higher level, he managed to make it count, scoring points in 3 out of the 4 he entered. Along with Jan, he had a succesful swing through South America and finished the year having played in 25 cities, the most of out the 10 players.
There's an interesting interview with Paul on the LTA web site. The reason we haven't seen him for a while is because he ruptured his ankle ligament soon after AO qualifying. He says recovery is now going well but it looks like it could be quite a while yet before he's fully fit.
