But Naomi didn't 'deprive' Katie of a place - Katie deprived herself by losing to a lower ranked player.

Well of course that's pedantically correct, but I always find it hard to swallow when a Brit knocks out a fellow Brit who is expected to win, and then loses poorly in the next round.  But hopefully that won't be the case this time and we can all celebrate Naomi making it though to the MD!!

I agree. But it still seems mean to be cross at Naomi when one should be cross at Katie.

If only there had been some binkin' livestream we at least could have got a sense of how they both were playing and it would all be a lot clearer.....cry

Amen to that
I'm very much hoping that the threat of the 'youngsters' coming up to and past their shoulders inspires our 'veterans' into a bit of a renaissance as they don't take being 'usurped' lightly, and raise their levels to compete, and all spur each other on. Everyone playing well together, at least as far as realistically possible.

And from there: wolrd domination, obviously! evileye

I'm a firm believer that more players playing well, regularly is the best way to lift GB Women's tennis up, all throughout the pyramid. Annie begets Mel, begets, Katie O begets Bally... Laura begets Hev begets Jo begets Naomi... and so on.

Well that's definitely something we can all agree on.  And I'm not really angry at Naomi - more gutted for Katie.

Naomi did her job today and won, Katie didn't and lost.

Yes, Naomi might lose in the next round, I mean she's been, well let's be kind and say inconsistent of late. And that would be a pity. But blame her in any way for going and beating Katie if she then loses. Well certainly I won't, I just don't see it.

Yes, CD, it would be good to have some idea of their levels today though still wouldn't alter the fact that Naomi simply won which is kind of what she's there to try and do.

Anyway Naomi now just go and win again and again ...

OK, I've been thinking this ever since the draw came out, with no evidential basis or justification, just a gut feeling, a hunch: Katy Dunne is going to beat Jabeur.

 Go for it, AliB

And I thought I was being gutsy going for Gabi over Brengle.....

In fact if Katy D doesn't win it's Naomi's fault

For what it's worth I'm very neutral on Gb ladies - v pleased for naomi, whatever limitations of her game, Id like to see her bounce back and this win will help her a lot.

For Katie B, she's got lots of time, if she is genuinely good enough she will bounce back, this loss will be just a blip.

Hope naomi goes on and wins again.

Does naomi get ranking points for this win?

20. Both Naomi and Katie made the FQR last year (the only 2 GB women to do so, making this year's draw even more annoying) and that was worth 30.

Yes 20, which will be helpful to her, 30 for winning QR2 and 40 for qualifying. QR1 losers get 2 pts. Katie B loses 30 pts for reaching the FQR last year.

Edit: I think I've managed to repeat Steven pretty successfully wink

 Good point.

And I think her coach is currently Bertrand Perret, the guy suspended for three months in the Shuai 'corruption' case.

So she's lost her coach.

Right, AliB - you might well be on to something !
