RE: US Open qualifying first round draw

Boulter seeded 2, Watson 11.
Watson and Swan could meet in the FQR

Katie B v Naomi tough one first up for both - Katie must be favourite I guess.

going to go with 3 wins there in the first round, 4 at a stretch, cant see it being more

Yeah, I reckon the 3 I thought had a decent chance to qualify pre draw (Katie B, Heather and Harriet) will come through their first round matches, but think that'll be as good as it gets. Very interesting match for Hev vs the young talented jr - hopefully it's come a year or two early for Cori. Danilovic (or Andreescu) will be a tough potential second round tie for Harriet. Heather could well be on for a Vancouver final rematch with Doi in the FQR here.

I'll go:

Katie B to qualify
Heather FQR
Harriet 2QR
the other 4 out in the first round.

Well, we've got to nail our colours to the mast.....

Can only think about QR1 - after that it's all too much - but based on QR1 only, I'd say that I can't see Katy Dunne beating Ons Jabeur, Katie B should beat Naomi, I'll go for Gabi to beat Brengle (completely against seeding but why not), Heather should out-nouse young Coco, Katie Swan to beat Chiesa too (she didn't do very well at Chiswick), and I love both Harriet and Jaimee but I'll go for Harriet..... So that makes 5 (optimistic or what.....)

Hmm, too optimistic I think - 5 out of 6 would be some going. Unfortunately I think Katy would be 2nd favourite against pretty much everyone in the draw, it was always going to be tough, but pretty unfortunate for her to draw a top end seed. Brengle did win that awful Landisville tournament, but she was 1-1 with Gabi before retirement, so Gabi could / should take encouragement from that and Madison did then go on to lose in the first round of Vancouver, but I'd still make her (Brengle) a favourite, but not beyond Gabi.

I'm a bit more encouraged looking at Chiesa's general results since Wimbledon but I had thought she would be a bit too strong and she has made a bit more impact on the main WTA tour this year, albeit mainly on clay, but also playing Aussie, French (qualifying) and Wimby qualifiers will put her in better stead. Again, I'd make her favourite but could have been a worse draw for Katie S.

Really hope Katie gets past Naomi.

Coco Gauff is a potential banana skin for Heather in Q1 - a pretty big game for a 14-year-old.

Tough Q1s but I hope at least two or three make it through!

In terms of actually qualifying the brackets look pretty grim.
Had such high hopes, but I'm instantly dejected now.
Perhaps combined Brit-unity can take hold if the first players get good results, kind of like how winning a gold medal on the opening day of an Olympics can galvanise and inspire Team Gb to continued success and surpassed expectations. Perhaps... maybe... hopefully...

I think I need a break.

On the bright side, we have seven in qualifying on ranking alone (yes, one or two should really have made the main draw if they had played to their potential).

I'm going for Katie B, Gabi, Harriet and Heather to win, with no real expectations for Katy and Katie S. But who knows, if the order of play allows it, early wins could indeed inspire the others.

I'd certainly agree that Katie B is favourite against Naomi but surely not a draw she would want, vs a fellow Brit but maybe more relevantly such an unpredictable one. Naomi could take out anyone in the qualifying draw if her serve is anywhere near its best. Though it was verrry far from that last time out.

Yes difficult to look beyond QR1 for starters and I think I'll wimp out on predictions. Hope for the best and hope no lingering Landisville issues for those who had problems there.
