Emily manages a break to stay alive. But, she's only held serve twice in the match so far, and needs to do so now to keep hanging on, 4-6 *2-5

*immediately holds to love*
4-6 3-5*

Not the early 19th birthday present Emily was hoping for.
SF: Emily APPLETON (GBR) [2] 571 lost to Da Hye KIM (KOR) UNR 4-6 3-6

*now standard remarks about puzzling scheduling etc*

Emily will have a CH ranking on Monday and (if the elbow is OK) may well be top 500 after the US open. biggrin

Pity.

Yes, there have been considered remarks on scheduling etc. You any thoughts, ABB ?

Edit : ah, sorry I thought you were questioning them. Then I wondered, and looking back I see you have been one who has been a bit perplexed by the relentless schedule.

Thing about Emily is, that this year, and in the last 12 months, sh'e had a spectaculalry successful time of things. Dozens of finals, first pro titles, first singles titles, shot up the rankings.
So, why are we so collectively reserved about her because she hasn't achieved even more? She's not yet 19.
Yes, she may have struggled in anything but $15K draws, but that can come, can't it?
Is it the spectre of the SKY contract? Well, for me, negativity in this area makes sense, because, generally, I think that Murdoch and anything he touches, even tangentially, is pretty much the cancer at the heart of the world dividing us against are selves for his profit with calculated malice of forethought.... I understand not everyone holds this view however, and so am puzzled by the reaction to what could be portrayed as just a willing sponsor funding a GB prospect and giveing them stern targets and goals that instill professionalism and no slacking. I think SKY will use them up, burn them out, and toss them aside at the first sign of weakness or failure to deliver sufficient refected glory, but, again, most people aren't as concerned about the damage that the Murdoch empire inflicts as am I, they probably have SKY subscriptions, or read one of his papers, so why the concern about this partnership with Emily?

She's played a lot, but not much more thn some of our other players. Her block has gone on for a long time, without cessation, and, as CD noted previously, there are consequences to that. But then, someone like CiCi bellis was very lightly raced, and still wound up with a horrid injury. You can never tell.

Just then, a pause to stop and recognise what Emily has actually achieved in the last 12 months - and it's pretty excellent - rather that what she has not; something of which I amongst everyone have certainly been most prominent in failing to acknowledge

According to CoreTennis Emily is equal 26th in most WTA/ITF singles matches played this year.

Emily's 30 wins, 16 losses tie in with my figures for her MD matches.

Add on 7 wins, 5 losses from qualifying and her total matches are 58 with 37 wins and 21 losses in 23 tournaments.

Doesn't include qualifying matches. Emily has played 57 matches in 2018, not the 46 that Core Tennis claim. She has played 11 qualifying matches this year.

Here's the full list of her 2018 matches.

Qualifying matches are in gold. Sometimes Emily will start in QR2 in the ablve, becasue her QR1 was a BYE

Either way, she's played a lot of matches, and in long blocks.

My extra qualifying match seems to be a mythical QR1 match I noted from Week 27 ( Den Haag ) from the WTA match site "matches".

The ITF site and forum make clear she actually got a bye to QR2 there and Emily's WTA site match history has somehow disappeared for now. So I would take ABB's 57 matches in total as the correct exact figure.

Quite a few players higher in the CoreTennis list will have clearly played less qualifying matches so will have been involved not just in less tournaments but played less total matches.

So perhaps a target achieved which is good in itself. But overall, whether what she has achieved in the last 12 months has been "pretty excellent" as ABB suggests is relatively questionable. I think some previous instincts are right ( including the Sky ones which may actually be shared at least in some respects by quite a few wondering if the tie-up is in her best interests long term ). Clearly good in some aspects re ranking ( for whatever importance she and/or others places on that ) and latterly tournament wins but I would think that she will overall be disappointed in her past year.

I don't see that the ranking changes most of the doubts that have been expressed re some choices and reasons for these choices.

Very important year ahead to develop and make much more progress above 15K level and against higher ranked players.

And have a proper close season first to work on her game allied to some important team consideration of the best way ahead.

This is possibly (?) a better format to review a players season overall:

Emily is only 19 on Thursday - perhaps 5-6 years off her peak.  Top 500 is a good ambition for this year.

As for 25Ks you would need 80-100 points to be competitive - and have some very good non-counters biggrin
