That's a fair draw given the field. Siegemund hasn't really got going since returning. There's some very capable players in the qualifying and the WCs were Halep (who may well withdraw), Ka Pliskova, Collins and Coco V, so this is probably about as good as could be. Hopefully there's not much to read into that H2H because clay is Siegemund's best surface and clearly Jo's worst.
I'll be pretty much astonished if this match takes place, given Kiki's great run to the Cincy singles final and her likely withdrawal from New Haven - congratulations to Kiki, really has worked very hard on every deficient aspect of her game, and is reaping rewards for some fabulous displays this year.
Either way, in her latest partner, Jo has found herself a familiar face to Brit doubles watchers, and one in fine form this year - a bit surprised actually that she didn't have a more loftily ranked partner than Jo arranged for here, even if there were last minute withdrawals.
Team Joe Cole it is then.
R16: Johanna KONTA/Nicole MELICHAR (GBR/USA) 133 (115 + 18) v. Kiki BERTENS/Johanna LARSSON (NED/SWE) [3] 41 (19 + 22)
Early match for Jo today.
New Haven, and the entire WTA, has disappeared from the official Live Scoring app (it was there yesterday).
Jo seems unruffled by the development, 2-0*
First set to Jo 6-2 Serve appears to be working. 74% of first serves in winning 93% of them.
74% is high indeed. Jo's recent matches on hard courts have tended to start by serving quite poorly and with low % which gets dragged up by the end of the match to ~55-60%.
Without having seen a single shot, I will choose to interpret this as: a) playing quite well b) continuing the tentative upward tick of form
