The jetsetting schedule is working! A second singles title for Emily, and second now in a month
F: Emily APPLETON (GBR) [1] 570 v. Yu Jin AHN (KOR) UNR 6-4 3-6 6-2
Congratulations to Emily hopefully she can now dominate this level and push on making progress in and eventually winning 25Ks. The first year on tour as we saw with Katie Sean is to a certain extent getting used to the lifestyle. Although Emily does not have Katie's junior pedigree I sense she is prepared to put in the grunt to get where she wants to be and although one may question her itinerary to a certain extent the harder you work the luckier you get. I just wonder if you asked EWS if she had her life again (bar injuries) would she change it? I sense the answer would be no.
Hmmm yes, this will please Emily and justify her long trip out, her 2nd 15k title in a row (with that misfire at Chiswick in the middle), but heavens, beating an unranked player in the final, this is all about the title and not the challenge she is facing in actual matches. And even so, it took her three sets to beat the UNR (CH 931) player, but don't think Emily will be minding that at all at the moment. I hope this gives her more confidence.
She is scheduled another two weeks out here, and I hope at the end she does take a bit of a breather, and then it will be interesting to see whether she continues at this level or does try and step up to the 25k level again, where she has not yet looked remotely comfortable. Probably more next year's challenge, for now hope she enjoys a small Korean celebration.
I know it was only an unranked player, so duff on paper, but that unranked player still had to win the same number of matches, taking out the no 4 seed on the way. So for me it's still a decent tournament win, and best of luck to Em going forwards.
She was actually the very slight betting underdog in her semi final with Garland so it's not just an expected title just because she was #1. Think she has 2 or 3 more consecutive weeks of Korea events so obviously sees it as a good chance to boost her ranking.
Oh and Katy Dunne lost a set (and was taken to 5 in another) to an unranked 25 year old Korean a couple of months ago who lost 0 and 1 a couple of weeks earlier to , at the time, badly out of form Freya.
No doubt yes what Emily was looking for in wins, ranking points and another title. Well done to her.
However, in general she is good at dealing with lower ranked / unranked players which is what she generally had in Ireland and here. But stepping up has been her problem,
I was aware of that but still very surprised when trawling back through her match history to find only two MD singles wins above 15K in her career and none in the last two years : Woking 25K August 2015 WC vs Beth Askew ( now Grey ) Surbiton 50K June 2016 WC vs Alexandra Stevenson
Doubleswise, for all her titles, here she has only won five MD matches above 15K, and never more than one at one tournament. She clearly does play a lot of 15K doubles very successfully, to such an extent that she is not far off the maximum ranking points you could have from purely 15Ks and runner ups are non counters. I hope that this is complimentary to her singles development which must be very much the priority.
So well done on these two 15K titles and we must hope they, and hopefully a further good two weeks out here, give her the confidence to begin to make some sort of impact against generally better ranked players as she approaches her 19th birthday.
