"Serious doubts over participation of top players at the inaugural Davis Cup Finals in November 2019. Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic both refused to commit at this stage despite the offer of a wild card, and now Alexander Zverev has ruled himself out."
With steven tweeting:
"So those who guessed that Switzerland and Serbia would probably get first refusal on the Davis Cup wild cards were right after all, it seems ..."
And from a different tweeter:
"On his latest podcast John Wertheim mentioned that he has heard the money is now in doubt - not as much available as was originally alluded to apparently. Wonder if that is linked to the appearance - or lack thereof - the top stars."

is it possible to read into this that Andy and delpo where the two biggest names that would commit? Or is that a stretch ?

No ways Andy would commit at this point in time.
I'm guessing that's exactly how the wild cards were dished out.. Basically to the biggest draw star's and their nations, who would commit at this time. In principal at least, if fit etc. I think Leon sort of hints at these discussions with GB players.
Totally disagree with the WC thing. If a nation didn't qualify on merit, it has no business to be there. Moreover it may become a blocker for minor nations, elitist.
If it flops now though there is now a contract to resolve, which wasn't there in the past.. So they would have to declare bankruptsy or settle commercially to wrestle it back but what of the money. How can they now start to back track on this. Surely they must have to honour some figures contractually..
Novak Djokovic today: "I just feel like the date of the Davis Cup is really bad, especially for the top players. Between the two, I will prioritise the World Team Cup, because that's a competition of ATP, but we still have to obviously discuss within my team personally."

and remembering that Djokovic is President of the Players Council which I believe is the players body within the ATP and therefore he has to support the APT route in reality from a political perspective...
the ATP cup (with keeping the old DC) always seemed like the better idea to me. As long as there were no other events the same week there would be very few absentees among the top players for tiredness/injuries and you wouldn't p*ss off the DC purists
Although having it in Australia wouldn't be the best for travelling fans...Madrid works a lot better in that respect
