Freya seemed to be playing the more aggressive tennis of the two, from what I saw, and - as such - deservedly takes the second set 6-3 (she was broken back at 5-1 but played some good tennis when she needed to at 5-3 15-30 down).
Sam played a clever second half to that set - shows the value of experience.....took it 6-3
Started coming to the net to take the ball out of the air on defensive loopier shots - and credit to her because she completely muffed the first one she did, but stuck to it, and rightly so (it's exactly what Freya never does and yet should be able to do with no problem). And sliced a bit, and kept her groundshots deep and mainly on Freya's BH.
Assuming she sees it out then it's been a good day. Would have preferred Freya, but 4 joining Maia and (I'm assuming) 4 wildcards will equal the 9 entries from last week, albeit in a stronger field.
Alicia wins 7-6 6-1

Main draw is now showing on the OOP, if not the MD sheet itself yet. Fran is the 4th WC, with the others as surmised, but unfortunately Fran gets the worst draw against the top seed. Otherwise match ups look as good as can be expected, though we will probably still do well to get 2+ through (with only 1 mandatory)
Lissey Barnett [Q] vs Ella Taylor [Q] Emily Arbuthnott [Q] vs Marina Bassols Ribera Sam Murray [Q] vs Katarina Zavatska [7] Jodie Burrage [WC] vs Cagla Buyakakcay [8] Beth Grey [WC] vs Ana Vrljic [Q] Emily Appleton [WC] vs Irina Ramialison Maia Lumsden vs Ivana Jorovic Fran Jones [WC] vs Vitalia Diatchenko [1]

In such a strong field it's good to see Lissey drawn to play Ella, with one of them guaranteed to progress.
Maia gets last week's finalist, and the women who beat her last week quite easily, so that's a bit unfortunate.
Sam gets the junior (2000 born) WTA 200 or so player so fingers crossed that a bit of Sam's experience and nouse will cause her problems.....
Beth gets the 34 year-old qualifier - she used to be top 200 but it's a fair way back now - that's got to be a decent draw.
Irina Ram is a solid French player, always at the 300/350 mark or there abouts, but no more - clearly she'll be the favourite against Emily App but it's certainly playable.
Emily Arb gets your classic young Spanish girl who's only 18 and top 450 but never really played juniors. However, her ranking seems more based on a few excellent 15k last year than anything much this year. Go, Em !
And tricky draw fro Jodie against the savvy Turkish woman, ex WTA 60. But she's not 60 now so go for it
Discounting a win by RET against Shapatava in Denain in July, that's Emily Arbuthnott's best ranking win in almost a year; since she defeated WR379, Arcangioli on September 8th last year in Hammamet.
