 Ostapenko calls herself Alona.

Not the best level of match. Jo not great in the first set, and Brat just not great.
Still a W is a W, so well done Jo. It's great that she is getting closer to the form that took her to WR4 again. I hope she can build on this.

No need to call names...how were you when you were 20?

I do though get the feeling that Aliona might just be the reincarnation of Lucrezia Borgia - not the real one, the apocryphal one of legend. In centuries past, that glare could have condemned hundreds to grisly fates!

 Her facial expressions are hilarious.

Ah, thanks. I hadn't come across that before.

I am aware that folk have told of instances of very poor behavior by Ostapenko in her junior days. But as a senior she has matured and is maturing and I think she is a welcome member of the leading players. Takes all sorts and she is an err sort.

And well done, Jo !

Thanks! Certainly much fewer errors from Jo in the highlights shown, and appeared more like the Jo when she was at her best. Lovely wide serve ace to finish!

Yes, certainly good signs. Though the best to watch moments for me came from Ostapenko, but when Jo is on form doing what she does well she is hard for most to beat.

Not sure about her errors since highlight reels seem biased against points won on errors

The match to decide Johanna's next opponent is underway: Vika v. Kiki
Azarenka, having retired in tears on the weekend in San Jose, has recovered well enough to play here on a WC, and is all over Mladenovic, who seems in a very low ebb of late.

Kiki receives a bagel. Her singles form has been poor for over a year but she has had some very good doubles wins. Won a slam?

Serve on top, no breaks. Short points, big hitting, both efficient. Vika using a kick serve on some first serves is throwing Jo's timing out, and yielding easy points.
*2-3
