Great set of results! When I went to sleep last night Hev looked to be struggling. Fantastic to come through a tough match like that. I wonder if she managed to start holding onto her serve or just kept break8ng her opponents. Anyway confidence booster. And as for Joko, brilliant. Its tough not to beat yourself when youre playing someone like Serena. Just the reputation is so intimidating. So to win by that score line...
That's the first time Serena has ever failed to win more than 1 game in a WTA singles match, JoKo was on fire!
*Completed - e.g Serena did once retire against Patty Schnyder in 2007, down 0-6 0-3
Jo played very well, and managed to just beat the player in front of her on the day, not the myth, the legend.Bit of a weird feeling seeing the result, but delighted for Johanna
The first Brit to beat Serena, and thus the first to have career wins over both Williams sisters - she very nearly has non losing records against them both: 1-1 against Serena, 3-4 against Venus.
Hopefully she'll be able just blank this result, and all the accompanying hoopla, and focus later today on the considerable danger of Sofia Kenin, who has been in excellent form herself. Multiple-win weeks are the order of business, and hopefully there's plenty more to come this week, and the first round form can be carried on regularly against 'normal' opponents.
Apparently Jo played well, but Serena couldn't move or serve, and isn't good at San Jose. I'm happy Jo played well and got such a great result, but I'm not going to get over excited until she backs this form up. (Which I really hope she does).
