Ridiculous time to be finishing a match when you expect the winner to play again the next (or the same) day. Well fought Andy. No-one will blame you if you pull out now.
... well, if I were Mr. Copil I may grouse a bit.
but Copil lost!
exactly
Yes, but that is what chris is saying - we always moan when one of our players gets pipped by some 'pesky' who then goes on to withdraw from the very next match.
Copil could (he won't, but he could) quite fairly grouse 'why did you try so blinkin' hard to win if you weren't even going to give the next match a shot?'

I don't moan about that it's just tennis - and part of the game people withdrawing through injury or tiredness

Maybe 'moan' was the wrong word - but feel slightly peeved and 'what if'..... Yes, it's part of tennis, and absolutely no blame on anyone - just trying to explain chris' post which seemed tongue in cheek and quite funny to me.

Aye, that it is. But I still don't see any harm in extending the "Lucky Loser" principle, so that if a player can't make the start line at the next round, let the losing player take his place. It is, after all, supposed to be about the spectators so depriving the spectators of a game to watch seems silly. (...although I fully agree that players that need rest/ treatment should be allowed to withdraw).
That was the rule in top money tournaments in France (and may still be the rule) - only applied to the final and the semis, though - and, exactly as you say, it was for the spectators and to add value to the event - if one player can't make the starting blocks, the loser can be fished back out.
Emotion of the battle , nothing to do with his criticism of players not having to play at 3am or no one benefitting from it; nothing about Andy maybe not playing the quarterfinal.

I like this idea, as Indy says, there would have be be some time rule otherwise the other guy would have made arrangement to leave. Also how would points and prize money work? 1/2 each for that match? abit like the withdrawing from slams rule?
Managed to catch the end of the match this morning before travelling. Was really quite happy for Andy and of course, you have to love the emotion. It really looks like he just wants to play tennis.

I guess the loser could still not get the points and prize money added for the round they lost ( these all stay with the withdrawn winner ) but could then receive points and prize money for any subsequent win ( but still less these points and prize money associated particularly with the round initially they lost in ). So the total points awarded and prize money awarded would remain unaltered.
