Congratulations to Paul that is a fantastic result all down to a year or more of grunt he has put in at South Carolina, his coaches there also deserve some praise.

As you say, mega congrats not only to Paul but to his coaches and set up at South Carolina.
However, I don't think we can say that this result is 'all' down to that year.
Paul used to train 4-5 times a week with some excellent and dedicated coaches at Nuffield. They should take some credit too. Jonny Carmichael, in particular.
Because before he left stateside, as mentioned, he played a super game of tennis (he was national champion, I believe, in one of the junior categories).
His main problem was lack of match practice (that old chestnut), made worse in his case because he didn't have the means to travel as much as many others.
That problem has obviously been addressed at college. (It's one of the best things about college tennis for the Brits - constant high level matches, and with match coaching).
Although it's great to see his own learning curve too - today beating in two sets the guy he lost to in R1 last week.
Anyway, congrats to the whole team - all working in perfect harmony !
And to the young man himself - not bad to take an ITF title while still only 18
Paul's been surprising me all week (having not been past R2 of a Futures before) - I'd hoped the set he won against the Russian last week might mean he had a chance in the final, but he really cleaned his Klok (igmc) in the end - I think it's a career best ranking scalp too. Paul should jump about 600 places into the top 900 on Monday week - he had 2 points, 18 to add, 1 to come off (from a Slovakian Futures this week last year), so he'll have 19 points on 6 Aug.

He is down for Slovakia next week. Was hoping his efforts here would have earned him an SE, but with qualifying there not starting until tomorrow, he will have to start from QR1 as this week. Hopefully with his huge rankings jump, he won't have to play many more qualies in the future.
I have to say I hadnt even bothered with this thread as I assumed it was probably someone doing well in doubles but not singles! Boy was I wrong - never heard of him but as a Yorkshireman myself, that is blooming great to see someone from these parts do so well and will follow him with interest moving forwards!
What was his junior record like, did he do anything at that level at all?
PS Julian Ocleppo who he beat earlier in the event is son of Gianni Ocleppo, who was a decent Italian David Cup player and Dee Ocleppo, now divorced from Gianni and married to Tommy Hilfiger! So step son of Tommy Hilfiger. Just for info

Not sure whether you have just read about he victory in the final today or whether you have read back through the whole thread. If you haven't, you need to read back, particulalry on Page 2 of this thread where CD gave us some insight into Paul's background. It has sort of made him one of the forum's new favourite players.

He is now playing college tennis in the USA.
Hi Bob - yeah I'd had a look back and quite a story and quite a week. Will follow with interest moving forwards!
