Interesting that Emily App is playing doubles with the girl, born 2001, who's just turned 17, Lulu SUN, WTA 646, who lost to Sasha Hill at Roehampton.
Lulu switched from Swiss nationality to New Zealand just in time for Wimbledon - word had it that it was a temporary switch, for Wimbledon purposes (although I don't quite know why) but now she's unsure and might stick with them. Her father is Croatian, too, and her mother Chinese, but born in NZ, although grew up in Geneva (guess it's good to have options.....)
Well, the R32 draw is now complete - and thank goodness Emily does not play ELG Instead ELG plays a promising Hong Kong based junior (though of Sri Lankan heritage), but still has as good a chance of finally getting her ranking here as she could ask for. As for Emily, she definitely could not ask for a better draw to earn finally a singles win...
When Alice had her run to the SF in Colombo in October, she defeated Emilie's opponent along the way, 6-4 in the third.
Karunaratne was designated as Sri Lankan then - which makes sense given the surname - but she must have switched to Hong Kong between then and now.
Amazingly, Karunaratne has 4 points, of which, fully 3 of them came by virtue of separate incidences of R32 RET in her favour. Only for the remaining point did she actually win the R32 match to earn the point!
Hmmph!
Emily looked like sensibly losing her first round doubles for once, thus 'logically' clearing the path to a singles win instead.
But, they decided to haul their way back in to the second set, save three consecutive match points, and force a TB
1-6 6-6
One of the opponents name was in part, Lazaro, but it was Emily and Lulu that came back from the dead, taking the MTB to cap a remarkable comeback, 1-6 7-6(11) [10-7]
Whether that augurs well for the singles exploits or not, time will tell...
Emilie's big match to earn a ranking has now started. Early signs are not too promising unfortunately. She has lost her first two service games, and though she won the first break back, the stat I don't like is only 3/11 1st serves won so far. If her serve is that ineffective she will struggle in the match, so I hope she can improve the effectiveness of her first serve as the match continues. *1-3
Emilie twice recovered a break in the second set, but has been broken again for 3-5*. The last game looked as if it wasn't going to end. Emilie had 9 game points and saved 3 break points, but lost the game on the 30th point.
Yes, failing to win one of those 9 GPs, losing 3 on DFs, did for Emilie sadly. The next game Karunaratne served out easily for the set and match, so Emilie fails still to win her 3rd counter but a brave effort nevertheless. 3-6 3-6
