Weeks 27 & 28 - The Championships, Wimbledon - women's singles (grass)

I only watched on TV, but for me the highlight of Ms Dunne's match was her absolute delight at getting her first hawkeye challenge right.

Carrying on from my observations and others... whats the story... Im watching Katie B on the telly, and looking at all of the empty seats at 12:00. I would have paid good Scottish money to be in a seat at 11:30. Surely the no 2 tickets from the Q would be gone by now?
Following on from Stevens comment sticking say 1000-2000 ground passes per day on Ticketmaster, would be a win win. More spectators at 11:30 am and less pressure on the Q?

I've found in the past that a lot of people on the show courts don't actually arrive until well after 12. Perhaps there should be more seats available via the queue, and less elsewhere.

Katie B is playing a great match here and has actually lost a lot less points on serve than her opponent. Unfortunately Osaka is showing she knows how to handle the big points and leads 3-6 3-4*

Yes difference in this match is when Katie created chances Osaka stomped them out, when Osaka created chances she took them.

But great performance

Yes, the stats show 1/8 break points taken, as opposed to 3/4. Still, an excellent performance, and you wouldn't know that there were over 100 places different in their rankings at the start of this week.

Some nice tennis from Katie but her level dropped alarmingly on the key points, especially the break points but also times when she had 15-30 on return. Several areas that need huge amounts of work. Having said that, she does look top 100 standard right now, with room to develop.

A great performance from Katie B. She showed some nice clean hitting too, and was neither over awed nor out of place against Osaka. I look forward to Katie now heading towards that top 100 and an automatic entry into the US Open MD. I've been impressed by the way that Katie's tennis has come on during the grass court season. She clearly has plenty of confidence, as well as an ability to learn and adapt fast. If she can maintain both those abilities they should stand her in good stead.

Six months on and my early season predictions are looking pretty stupid.

The automatic entry bit may be problematic given she is outside the typical cut-off (last four years - 109, 105, 102, 104) and the main draw entry list deadline is 6 weeks before the event, so she would require tons of injuries and very few players using special (protected) rankings.

Live rankings currently have Katie at 111 with a few players below her, including Serena, still playing at Wimbledon and some involved in events on clay. It is possible some players above her have points to defend next week.

Mine too. Far too optimistic about the older players and totally missed the huge improvements by Harriet and Gabi Taylor. Even those I did predict to improve their rankings, Katie Boulter, Katy Dunne and Katie Swan, are doing far better than I expected.

Yes, assuming Katie doesn't somehow belatedly get into a big ITF next week and do well she has no time to further push up her 16/07 ranking. Openerarankings agrees that 111 live ranking and that will be net of all points so far added in the Wimbledon fortnight and points to come off. So that will be as high as she gets for now.

But she is doing so well of late and provisionally looking very good for Australian Open direct entry. She is live race #95 with the Australian Open MD entry date 5 weeks after the WTA finals conclusion ( I assume the end of this year's race ).

Dommie is one of my favourite women to watch love her game, so wont be too fussed if diva Jo loses to her today. Not sure what everyone else thinks but my support of Jo is wavering these days.

Yes, in response to both you and Kundalini I was blithely thinking that Katie would still have another 3-4 weeks post Wimbledon to push her ranking towards the top 100, having failed completely to look at the calendar. Oh well, a seeded position in US qualifying she will probably have to settle for. Still, the real target is for her to push on and make that top 100. As Cameron Norrie showed (though there are differences in the men's and women's points set ups) it can take a while to make that breakthrough because of the transition in tournaments that's also required. Regardless, it's been a wonderful grass season for her and plenty of promise to build off.

Diva Jo
Armchair, fairweather supporters might abandon her if she's not actively still rewriting the last 40 years of British womens tennis history, chapter-by-chapter; luckily for me, I supported her long before these neophytes, and am unwavering in that support, and hoping to see her sometime soon work her way out of the year long trough, the slough of despond, into which she's found herself.
Working hard today, and once more, not flowing, but hope springs eternal.
Down a set to the collective Pome power - Cibulkova is always good value.
3-6 *1-1
