Katie D was such a pleasure to watch. What a lovely girl.
Heather played some nice stuff but never looked like winning. Big hit to her ranking but she is playing top 100 stuff.
I think all the girls who went out did themselves proud, especially the newbies.
We really could have 5or 6 wins with slighter better draws
This is why we should fill our quota of wildcards, they have an opportunity of a lifetime and win or lose it can only be a good thing for development to test themselves against the best
When you see the round 1 results stacked up like.thay it really does remind you how impressive those performances were.
Top 50 players, former finalists. Never felt so positive about so many round 1 exits!
I agree, I'm normally despairing of the WCs who are normally journeymen as we haven't had the depth before, but this batch seems worthy, and with kinder draws IMHO had the same chance as anyone else in the MD to get through. Fantastic we've got three through to R2, and even better that we genuinely could easily have had five or six.
Managed to catch Harriet, Gabi, Katie B and Katie S over the last two days at Wimbledon (as well as snippets of Jo and Katy on the screens) - I've never seen such an encouraging band of British players pushing each other on. Great.
So happy with the performances of our players this year and great for all those who made the annual pilgrimage to SW19 - none of our Brits disgraced themselves or went out easily and all three who got through deservedly did so and played really well. I think in the end they all showed they deserved the wildcards awarded.
The highlight for me was Katie Swan - there looked to be a real gap in class between Swan and Begu - in favour of Katie though - Begu was never allowed to get involved in the match and Katie was cool and efficient; she really didn't have a bad patch in the match, and I look forward to seeing how she gets on against Buzarnescu. If you had told a spectator who didn't know who the players were that there was a gap of 170 places in the rankings, they would have nodded sagely and said they could see the gap in standard, it is just that they would have got the players the wrong way round - it is a performance that may propel Katie S to a new level, especially if she can win on Wednesday.
I also though Katie B's performance was very good - Cepede Royg was far better than I was expecting, and it was a great match to watch - the crowd really got into it, especially by the end of the third set when Katie stepped up a gear. Jo Ko's match was what you'd expect, but very professional and measured I think; made a great start to the day.
Harriet, Naomi and Katy D all did well despite such draws - it was nice to see Naomi do much better than others on this forum expected - I think she showed she still has the potential to be better than her current ranking. Harriet's match was a really good one - the court was jam packed full way before the start and I think everyone there was impressed by how she matched Pliskova for two sets. I thought Pliskova lacked focus and concentration (perhaps understandably against a much lower ranked opponent who maybe she assumed she would beat easily). However suddenly in the third set she suddenly seemed to find her A game and pulled away from Harriet - I think this one was less about Harriet's injury and more about Pliskova finally finding her A game when she really needed it, but if Harriet is as good as Pliskova's B game, they she is progressing well.
I thought Gabi's match was the most difficult one to watch - she started so badly and maybe that was why the crowd were so quiet, but there were quite a few Bouchard fans on court, and she is clearly a big name for some, but it was disappointing to see the crowd favouring her over the Brit. I also think that Bouchard's three qualifying matches meant she was more match sharp, which is a big thing. I only saw the end of Heather's match, so impossible to say too much; other than maybe I underestimated how good Flipkens still is.
Anyway well done and having got my predication right on the forum of three players to make the second round, maybe we can get at least two players into Round Three - having beaten Begu, I don't feel Katie Swan should be overawed at all. Maybe she will be the next British player after Katie B to break into the top 100 - she looks to really be coming on leaps and bounds, and to have a fantastic future. I haven't given up on Katie B either - Osaka is a tough ask though, and Jo Ko has a much tougher looking match too against Cibulkova - I think all three matches are pretty hard to call, given how well the Katie's are playing.
Now time for a proper bed (after a long and much needed bath), I will look forward to catching the rest of the tournament on TV.
Thanks Andy. Really interesting reports. And agree with everything you say. Im pretty disappointed with the crowd in Gabis match. Particularly as she played some good tennis after the first set. My experience is though that most people get their tennis knowledge from very mainstream sources, which rarely cover the next layer of GB players in depth. At Surbiton I heard several people who, for instance, didnt know who Katie Boulter was, and she has had more publicity than others such as Gabi and Harriet. Also there is the Bouchard looks factor. At Roehampton I was surrounded by middleaged guys taking photos only of Ms Bouchard (and they definitely werent Canadian!).
