Week 26 - Wimbledon men's qualifying singles, Roehampton, Great Britain (grass)

You make good points, Oakie (as always)

And, yes, it was a major problem this year that none of our other players really stepped up in the other grass events and staked their claim for a card. I agree it left the door wide open.

But the fact that Kyle had one (and indeed Marcus ) does not convince me.

The vast majority of top players did not have quali wildcards when unranked/very lowly ranked 16 year-olds. They don't come from Grand Slam countries and could not have. And it did them no harm at all

My problem with the 'new' approach is that it reinforces the whole LTA ethos which is always (it seems to me) to throw everything at the child whilst a child - and then drop them like a hot potato when they can legally vote and buy alcohol in a pub. And this in a sport where you peak at 28. From my understanding, Finn and Jodie were heavily favoured and now seem on the periphery only one year later. Will Anton and Jack etc. feel like failures if they don't get a wildcard next year? Or the year after when they become adults? Given it's rare for any 18 year-old man to make the top-200 as of right. Or does that mean they now have to have wildcards so they don't fell like failures?

But, yes, the lack of other alternatives was an issue, I do agree, and for that the players have to look to themselves (as nearly all GB players do, indeed, unfortunately........)

You've got to love Stephane Robert.

He's 38 years old, a real beach surfer dude, and tweeted yesterday that he was having a ball playing Wimbly qualis, that he'd only taken the Eurostar over yesterday morning, hadn't even come a day early, even though he'd played a clay tournament last week, got stuck in the train for two hours, nearly missed his match, but just made it - and beat the 7th seed in two sets.

I saw Robert playing on clay in Edinburgh circa 15 years ago at the Scottish Championships there. Also saw a 16 year old Borna Coric he was good then but a bit full of himself

Alex down a set and a break.

Lloyd is a set down 5-7. One of the best sets of tennis I've seen in a while from both man including a wonderful tweener from Lloyd.

QR2:  Alex Bolt (AUS) WR 205 defeated (qWC) Alex Ward WR 311 by 2 & 2

Robert proving too strong for Lloyd, as I feared, though still only the one break down...

And then there was Dan and James ...

Cunning plan by the AELTC / LTA to give their fav Evo some play-off match practice before the qualies where he can now very possibly mildly improve the stats by at least helping to produce one qualifier

Evo will need to pull his socks up to improve those stats... he's 0-3 in the first set...

*0-5 now. Dan just hasn't got going yet. Is there some fatigue here?

Make that first set down the pan by 0-6.  Come on, Dan.  Buck up your ideas, !  At least Dino's still holding his own.
