Week 26 - Wimbledon men's qualifying singles, Roehampton, Great Britain (grass)

Why dont they put some benches in along the bank? It would make the experience so much more pleasant and give plenty of really good viewing. It would be an excellent use of our tenners.?The bank is just a bit too steep to sit on comfortably without sliding.

Good point, Indy and flamingowings - I'm ashamed to say it hadn't even occurred to me no

I think they don't want to film court 16 because it will look all shambolic on telly - not the image they want to project. There are no proper seats - hence Oakie's comments - just people standing around, or all sitting on the bank, or on the top of the bank, sprawled a bit everywhere. And the other courts are very close (there's a block of the four main ones - courts 13, 14, 15, and 16)

It's the only real reason I can think. Unless there's not room to put the camera posts? Seems unlikely....

'Offensiveness' is a red herring here. As a gay man, I wasn't in the slightest 'offended' by Dan's comments: I really couldn't care less what he thinks about gay people. However, when his go-to expletive is the one he used, it reveals quite a bit about his character and it calls into question his professionalism. Which is disappointing when he's had a year to think about being a better professional (and to work on his fitness, which was the reason he got upset in the first place).

His homophobia does offend me, as any -ism does, but I don't think it really reflects on his character, just that he's not very self aware and a bit ignorant. (hmmm, maybe that can be counted as his character).

I agree that he could have spent the year improving fitness instead of turning into a lard arse, and now paying the consequences. I am still unconvinced that he's really grown up this year, he's been saying the right things on camera, but who knows what still lurks underneath.

I dont see the connection with calling yourself a meatball and homophobia ?? I would have thought that people would be making comments on an implied suggestion that he had Brains ???

There are of course other brands of meatballs commercially available.

Notably Dr Skcollobs, but I dont think anyone would accuse Dan of implying that he had any of them ???

The inner machinations of Evo are beyond comprehension or second guessing. I dont feel his intention at that particular point in the match was to abuse anyone but himself. I couldnt hear what he said but watching Evo does come with at least a 15 rating. You come in the hope he will realise his talent but prepared for disappointment.

Unconscious careless offensive comments are a problem for most and constantly checking oneself, acknowledging mistakes and trying to do better require intellectual effort. Mid match, on a boiling summers day after playing day in day out to get there would challenge most, the last time I saw him at the same venue against the same opponent his language also self directed was appalling, he has really checked that and probably felt that this was a step forward. Indeed for Dan it probably is.

He is not a sanitised sports star, why on earth he wasnt ripped and ready for his comeback I dont know. I think he has struggled to cope with the stupidity of last year, particularly letting down those that have always backed him and is trying to turn over a new leaf. He is a competitive beast and fine tuning his self abuse when pushed to the limit is a work in progress.

A significant challenge for Tennis is engaging as large a pool of athletes as possible, intolerance of all types is present at many levels within the game. In terms of LGBT rights Tennis has lead the way with some very high profile role models. Calling out Dans behaviour is right, he should reflect on it. I feel his demons run a little deeper; at the moment he is a man fighting to salvage something from a spectacular talent that he has wilfully and repeatedly neglected. Becoming an icon for the LGBT community, a master of international diplomacy please prepare yourself for disappointment it is not going to happen, he is not that sort of role model.

At the risk of slightly side-tracking the thread (but it's the last day so hopefully people will forgive me) and because there are too many to personally message everyone, just interested:

What are the people who went to the qualis going to do about f***in' ticketmaster and the data breach?

Oakie, Jiwan, Nix, stevemcqueen,jb and everyone else (assuming you all bought on line): are you going to sign up for the 'free 12 months identity monitoring service'? Are these a good idea?

Re: Dan

As a gay man who gets called a faggot from strangers just walking around my city I really hope someone has explained to Dan the power words have, how derogatory words are used to other minority groups and how, as a privileged straight man in the public sphere he has an opportunity to help minority groups, not continue the age old rhetoric. I still have to call out my friends and members of my family on using gay terms in a negative way. To them it is just a word, but once I have explained it to them I think they understand more.

Anyway, looking forward to the main draw starting!

I can totally relate as I have had abuse my whole life due to my minority traits. I actually wrote an academic report on it this year, so am more inclined to state my views and call people out as I realise even more how much harm it does to me and others.

White, straight, male is still the most privileged group, and those of us that don't fall into it have a hard time with the -ist remarks that come our way. Dan's sort of comments open up bags of hurt for a lot of us.

Absolutely thats why it is right to call it out.

I take your point completely that you have to call out friends and family for the casual use of gay terms in a negative way, indeed the use of gay for naff/poor/crap/pathetic etc.... by teenagers drives me crazy. As did the use of Cretin earlier, fortunately as a medical condition it has effectively been eliminated by testing newborn babies.

Non of us are perfect and it is challenging to be sympathetic to everyone. I made a faux pas on Tuesday not bad, not intentional but I could see I had made someone uncomfortable as soon as I used the analogy and regretted it, it was true and in context, it would have been used as an example if the story was being reported in a news paper but as you say language is really important, the words in use define casual intolerance and a real problem.

CD I havent got a clue what to do, the warnings were very vague and its implications not clear.

I suppose the safest thing to do is change all our credit card and email details. To go to the effort of installing malware and for it to remain undetected for so long suggests to me that the perpetrators knew exactly what they were doing and how to use the data they extracted.

Like you very grateful for any advice.
