Weeks 22 & 23 - French Open, Roland-Garros, Paris (Clay)

Cam lost on a tiebreak, the difference being the first point and one where he touched the net after over sliding.

Kyle won comfortably, impressive against a man in such form.

L64:  (16) Kyle Edmund WR 17 defeated Marton Fucsovics (HUN) WR 45 by 6-1 1-6 6-2 6-3  smile

And it's the mercurial "Foggy" in the third round:

L32:  (18) Fabio Fognini (ITA) WR 18 (CH = 13 in March 2014) vs (16) Kyle Edmund WR 17

Did he actually touch the net ?   My IPTV system has long since packed in for the day so it's just live scores for me and some on twitter suggesting the net didn't move.

It didn't move but there wasn't any daylight between foot and net. I think it just touched it. Tough call.

OK.  Thanks.  It seems like a tough call at any time, but at that precise moment in a TB, even tougher.

His foot seemed to clearly slide up against the net/into the net on the replay. Certainly  Cam didn't  dispute it.

But it was a crucial point, Cam had won the point, the touch made zero difference  - it was a shame

Kyle's efforts have now matched his performance of 2017 by reaching the 3rd round. No surprise then that there is no change in his live ranking position as yet. His 3rd round match though is more crucial in that regard. Kyle and Fognini are in a straight battle for the 17th place in the rankings. A Fognini victory would see him leapfrog Kyle. A Kyle victory however would go a long way to at least protecting that 17th spot. Anyone else below him would have to reach at least the SF in order to overtake - Dzumhur or Nishikori, and below that they would have to reach the final. Of course, with Djokovic lurking around, that is not impossible.

On the upward side, Kyle is now within "one-win" reach Pouille and Bautista Agut, although both are still alive and kicking at RG. Pouille has a tough matchup with Khachanov next whilst Bautista Agut will take on the aforementioned Djokovic.

Reaching the Top 16 will have important implications for seedings at Masters series events so it will be a big step in the right direction. However, if it doesn't happen here, I am sure it will happen during the grass court season where Kyle only has 45 points to defend from his R1 win over Alex Ward at last year's Wimbledon.

Very confident Kyle will have made that Top 16 going into the hard court swing in the States leading up to the US Open.

Thought Cam might need some decent line judges before realizing that this is a different Gojo.

This was big news at the NCAA tournament Gojo (wake forest) has quite a reputation even Mike C has been complaining on Twitter

Really enjoyed listening to McEnroes punditary, he gave a very fair assessment of the match. Kyle didnt play anywhere near as well as he did in the first round, but won comfortably despite that against a decent opponent. If he had served anywhere close to his best he would have gunned down his opponent in 90 minutes. What is so exciting is Kyle is ranked 16 and there is still do much more that he can improve in almost every dimension of his game. He also has the will and self awareness to do it.

Obviously his movement has improved but still potential for further progress, McEnroe was talking about coming in as soon as he has moved an opponent laterally and stressed their likely return. Knowing when to take the power off and just get a ball back when chasing down rather than go for the show stopper etc...,

Not confident of his chances against Fognini, got to say. Hope he proves me wrong.

I see that four 19 yos have reached R2. In order from the youngest - Moutet, Shapovalov, Ruud and Tsitsipas and 14 under 23s in total. Currently in the live top 64 there are two 19 yos ( Shapovalov and Tsitsipas ) and 11 U23s.

With just #17 Berdych to complete ( lost the first 2 sets to Chardy ), only one top 20 seed has lost in R1 ( #14 Sock ). 6 seeds have lost in total and also #21 Kyrgios withdrew.

All fall down for the 19 yos in R2. The two youngest through to R3 are Zverev and then Coric, both 21, with 5 U23s in all. There are 4 U23s in the live top 32 so about par re matching that figure for current top U23s.

The top 11 seeds survive, 17 of the top 20, and 22 of the 32 seeded to reach R3.

Crucial moments at RG. Bautista Agut takes a tight 2nd set breaker to level with Djokovic at 1 set all while Zverev saves MP against Dzumhur in the 5th. Dzumhur actually served for the match in the 4th but Zverev survived that as well.
