One of the greatest pleasures of following British Tennis on this board is watching the younger plays transitioning from juniors ideally on through futures and challengers to the main tour. There have been many debates as to markers of progression that would suggest a young player was destined for the top.
Having turned 23 this year Kyle Edmund no longer features in the top 20 players by age but it has been fascinating watching his progress through the age cohorts. He generally sat in the top 3-5 of his own cohort and made the top 20 in the year above. A significant milestone often mentioned was making the top 200 as a teenager not that missing it by a few months would make a significant difference but it is a convenient line in the sand on the mens side.
Although we have not had an enormous number of players feature in recent times the numbers are gradually increasing in the tennisabstact.com tables updated on the 14/5 on the WTA side, Fran Jones featured at no 19 in those not yet 18 and Gaby Taylor (171) sits a couple ranking points out of breaking into those not yet 21 (no 20 Ranked 170). Katie Swan featured in those not yet 19 upto her birthday in March and with last weeks win is working steadily to rejoin the tables in those not yet 20 (288/no 20 223). Emma Radacanu has just started her journey but at 15 and progressing well In 15K tournaments I am sure will feature in the not yet 18 group sooner rather than later.
On the mens side George Loffhagen (1000) has just splashed down in the top 10 not yet 18 at no 8! Immediately in front of Aussie Open junior semi-finalist Aidan Mchugh (1012). I am sure it wont belong before we see the likes of Jack Draper and others in our strong 2001 cohort join them. Georges premature arrival suggests he has the potential to sneak into the cohort above, in the way Kyle did, when he gets a few more tournaments under his belt.
Jay Clarke is close to being in the top 200 as a teenager his birthday is 27th July and he sits at no 9 Ranked 228. Obviously we are all hoping he has a strong run on the clay and then enjoys some success on grass. Cam Norrie (one of a talented 1995 cohort that includes Kyle) sits at no 14 in those not yet 23, Ranked 104 it is amazing to think that this time last year he was playing college tennis for TCU, admittedly at a very high level but quite a transition.
I guess I hit it lucky in this regard. Almost the first player I started to follow through transition when I really got interested in tennis, is now in the Top 20 in the world and still climbing. As many of you will remember, my first sight of Kyle was just after he turned 17 and exactly one week before he scored his first ever ranking point.
Since then, I have followed with interest the progress, the trials, the tribulations of many others but none have been able to match what Kyle has achieved. Of course I have enjoyed watching Evo when he was on a roll and I hope he gets back there, but he was already established before I got to see him play live for the first time. Of those following most closely to Kyle's lead, I have yet to see either Cam or Jay play but that is something I am determined to put right in the near future.
But those aside it has been pretty quiet on the "next big star" stakes on the men's side for a while - at least in singles. To be fair, I think the popularity of the US College route has decreased substantially the number of 18-21 year olds, breaking through on the Futures circuit.
This latest group though have really begun to catch my interest. George's exploits in Uganda have been highly impressive, and Aidan (under Andy's guidance) clearly has massive potential. There are others too, as mentioned by Oakland. I think they should all have the courtesy of entering en masse into a Spanish Futures somewhere, so that I can jump on their bandwagon more directly.
But I sense times are a changing on both the girls and boys side. Although Andy has been very supportive of other British players, particularly mentoring Kyle informally. This I think is the beginning of Andys legacy ie. the 8 and 9 year olds growing up wanting to be like Andy!
Fran progressing well at 15k hopefully will stay fit and add to her tally.
Emma R has just kicked off with a 15K win suggesting she is at that level at 15, obviously will be focusing on junior slams but plays little and wins often so with that philosophy I think wont play juniors much as a 16/17 year old ie will prefer to play futures.
Holly F just hasnt played much recently and has the same potential as Emma.
Katie Swan is now fit and with a decent run of results could easily move through the not yet 20 cohort.
Fran remains our only player to feature in the WTA rankings by age in the not yet 18 group and I feel she may feel a bit of pressure from behind as the younger strong 15/16 year old juniors play a bit more senior stuff after the French Juniors
What a cracking six months for Gaby and Harriet!! Hopefully just the beginning of a prolific summer for both. Katie Swan ticking along quietly just behind them along with Gaby about to make the top 20 cohorts not yet 20 (217) and 21 (165) respectively. When last posted on
Harriet has a way to go in the those not yet 22 at 125 and needs to get her skates on as she moves up a cohort in July to those not yet 23 which sits at 97.
Most recent tables beginning to show significant progress by a number of Brits
