Week 23 ITF ($100k) - Surbiton, Grass

Interesting Etienne.

Success is great but I don't like some of the stories I hear from within various Olympic sports, the success by almost whatever means apparently and possibly at least challenging ethical boundaries, the at least supposed ultra professionalism, the allegations of bullying.

At times I can understand comments from other countries about our Olympic success and our means. Some jealousy no doubt, some maybe questions we would ask of others.

And UK Sport as you suggest no doubt provides funding at least partly following similar success targets to other sports as well, though of course tennis is for a couple of weeks every 4 years an Olympic sport.

Tjough as you point out, tennis certainly has the other means to have a wider outlook at times if it so chose.

Yeah, it's tricky. In principle, I've always been a "taking part is more important than winning" sort of guy, and refused to play for one coach who (despite being a perfectly nice bloke in other respects) cared only about winning by the greatest margin each match. But when the Olympics roll around, I've been watching the sports where the British medals roll in and ignoring the ones where peskies dominated, which just reinforces the culture of winning it all costs.

more delayed starts in London, they should have gone up north, apart from one brief outburst we haven't had rain in weeks

? They were supposed to start at 11 - judging by live scores, they must have actually started the match proper on centre court before 11:15

I stand corrected, I was going by flashscores which only has the main draw matches but I'm sure they moved the times forward from where they began hence my belief that it was down to the weather

I'm off to Surbiton tomorrow, Tuesday. My sleep schedule is still on mid-Atlantic time so I might not quite make it for 11, but I'll head for Katy v Jodie first once I get there.

If anyone else is going and wants to meet up, feel free to private message me here before midnight tonight and I'll let you know my mobile number by the morning or DM me on Twitter (@gbtennis) any time between now and close of play tomorrow.

With such a packed OoP tomorrow, you'll probably be rushing around trying to take in as much as possible just as I will, but at least if we know each other is there and have some contact details, there's a chance we'll see each other, even if just to say hello!

Half an opportunity to have 5 in the last 16. 2 guaranteed, Dart and Boulter will probably be favourite and Swan has already beaten Rodionova recently. Tough task for Tara.

I see there must have been a fair bit money on Harriet's opponent as she's come in from 9/4 to 13/8 overnight. On the other hand, Tara has come in a bit to beat Duval - some where saying that Duval was strapped up yesterday and visibly limping.

Dunne and Watson clear favourites and roughly the same price to win their respective all Brit matches.

Looking forward to watching some of the matches if they are streamed.

I don't think the women's matched are streamed, are they? They weren't last year - has it changed?

Praying that I'm right, but I've never been a big fan of Bolkvadze, although she's still young and certainly improving - not sure why punters would suddenly think she's a good bet (unless it's the other way round and Harriet's form is looking a bit duff - only saw a few minutes of her on the warm-up courts at the weekend - she looked fine).

Duval, though, really had her work cut out in the first two quali matches - not surprised if Tara has closed in.

I emailed someone a few weeks ago and they said they were hoping to, but I've actually seen no indication. I would have liked to have seen that Dunne match, especially with RG not starting until 1pm today.

I'll no doubt be following the scores closely. The two Katie's are pretty much 50/50 with the Brits both very slight favourite. 5 through would be great, but I'd settle for 4 I think.

I'm really interested to see how Gabi does against Heather. If Gabi even gets close it shows that change is coming. A pity this is a first up match for both on grass though -it would have been a great QF match! - no time yet for anyone to adapt much, though I assume Gabi has had more time to practice on the surface.

Gabi was certainly there on the practice courts at the weekend.

As you say, a really interesting first round match
