There is no sport in the country that would provide financial/logistical support to their equivalent of EWS over their equivalent of Emily App. Some of them wouldn't give support to Emily App either, as she's very probably not going to be a top 200 player. You can question the priorities of sports funding in the UK generally by all means, which are basically (in this order) a) elite athletes b) potential elite athletes c) grassroots. But let's not pretend that anyone would devote resources to someone who is going to be 34 in a couple of months time and who's potential is top possibly be a top 200 doubles player. And I say that having a lot of time for EWS. I'm not sure there is any other young player who would be clearly better than Emily App who isn't getting support - though I concede that perhaps if they had had the support then I might know them better!
In terms of coaching support, true.
But in terms of wildcards, not true at all.
I can find you plenty of French challengers where players like Em WS will be given wildcards. The French respect their older players, they think the public like to see them, they think they've 'earned' them and that it's part of the building blocks of tennis overall.
That's not to say that youngsters don't get support too but that it's not all one way. (In this case, however, it's true that Sam Murray also got a doubles wildcard so that's one for the 'oldies' already).
Probably throws up more issues about Wild Cards in general. Harsh on EWS but Sam herself lost out a couple of years ago for a Wimbledon QWC. Its all a bit messy if you ask me.
Dont know if anyone else commented but why on earth has Laura Robson missed the singles but rocked up for Doubles? That must make Ankita and EWS missing out worse youd think.
Emily has absolutely crumbled here after that really long game at 4-5*. Its 0-4 in the decider. Shame because Dolehide has withdrawn so a LL spot has opened up, but no Brit's will be able to take advantage.
Katie Boulter will now face a Q or LL after Dolehide pulled out and Ahn has moved to her seeding position. Thought Ahn would have been winnable but I guess her ranking was pretty high so depending on who it is, could now be an easier match for Katie.
And Em was 40-15 up, but has been broken again so the opponent will serve it out at 5-0. It was always a tough ask, but a shame considering that first set looked convincing.
If it was Ankita, then they would have missed out by the most miniscule of margins, based in current rankings. 249+192 = 441. Bektas/Sanchez 287+153 = 440
Two pairs that close they could have played a doubles qualifying. I must admit it grates for me that Emily did not get into the doubles, since for me that is both unfair and disrespectful. With all consideration Sam M has just come back from injury and hasn't been ploughing her own furrow all this year so far. It annoys me too that the organisers clearly didn't care either, or a solution could easily have been found.
Interesting the OOP tomorrow. There are 9 matches involving Americans, 6 matches involving Australians, 3 matches involving Russians, 2 matches involving Belgians, and 1 match involving Brits - Harriet and Katy D in doubles.
Coup Droit, that's why I specified the UK. British sport basically took a decision after the 1996 Olympics that sporting funding needed to be redirected at elite athletes, potential elite athletes and basically sod the rest. It's been wildly successful in some sports, and almost wholly destructive in others. Tennis has more independence than most sports because it has greater revenue but it has gone down a similar route anyway.
