And a question for Strongbow - was this prescience because Peter said the winners would face each other in the second round, or just because Alice was drawn against the top seed?
Never in a million years did I expect both to win, but I've never liked Brits flocking to the same event - cf Kurume - nice to be right once in a while
Intriguing battle underway now in Gothenburg between Alice and Anna. Alice has shaded the first set 6-4, mainly because Anna gifted her 3 breaks all on DFs
Well, the intriguing battle continues...Anna romped to a 5-1 lead 2nd set, then let it slip to 5-4 and just held on to her final service game after a couple of deuces. One set all, but Alice is 70-60 up on points, with the second set tied 29-29 on points, even though Alice was a break down.
Alice first, and she has started the 3rd set with a love hold: 6-4 4-6 1-0*
Final set has been just one way traffic, with Alice the easy victor in the end.
R16: GILLAN, Alice (GBR) 1095 beat POPESCU, Anna (GBR) Q UNR 6-4 4-6 6-1
Alice will now play the winner of 5th seed Karen Barritza (DEN) or Raveena Kingsley (USA). She'd be better off playing the seed. Raveena is only 19 and currently ranked 761, but has a JCH 22 and CH 284, so must have been injured for a while. She is currently a set up, with the match on serve 2nd set.
Kingsley it is. Last week was her first tournament back since mid-Nov 17, so assume she has been injured for a while (or studying). i would be exceptionally surprised to see Alice pull this one off, but she has already had one wondrous performance this week.
QF: GILLAN, Alice (GBR) 1095 vs KINGSLEY, RAVEENA (USA) 761 (CH:284 Aug 16) 19yrs (JCH:22 Feb 15)
Alice is definitely not in Raveena's league but she is a player I have a soft spot for. From her earliest junior days she has been Miss Steady Eddie. No drama, just plugs away with full focus until the last ball. Hasn't really developed a killer shot of any kind but quite good all round and always slowly but surely improving. I can't see her scaling any great heights but I really would like to see her do well.
Wow, yes, that's more than I expected, especially considering Rame is the 2nd singles seed. A brilliant win, and nerves held well. Nothing much in the rankings between the two finalists... Go Anna!

Yes. I have a soft spot for her too. She was the one (and the only one) I was pleasantly surprised about, 2 years back, posting after the NTC tournament. She beat Ella, I remember. As you say, not that she was going to be a real threat, that's not the issue, but that she stood out as being better than the crowd. Without having a name or story to expect her to be better. She doesn't look very sure of herself, rather hunched and a little scared at times, and yet takes the ball on and gets on with it.
