Week 20 - Challenger (€43,000+H) - Lisboa Belém Open - Lisbon, Portugal (clay)

L32:  (7) Liam Broady WR 163 (CH = 154 in February) vs Stéphane Robert (FRA) WR 170 (CH = 50 in October 2016)

Not sure whether that's a good or a bad draw for Liam:  Robert's now 37, but his favourite surface is apparently clay & he's certainly been round the block a few times...

Robert does not not have a game suited to clay, but nor does Liam and Robert is canny.

Agree with wolf, Robert always played well on the indoor hardcourt circuit, a lot of Gb events a few years ago, plays quite a flat game if I recall. If Liam plays tight he can win this. But Robert is experienced and as wolf says, canny. Roberts favourite surface might be clay but it's not his best!

I seem to rememeber Kyle giving him the runaround in the first round at Roland-Garros three years ago, Kyle eventually emerging the winner in five sets.  wink

Broken back and broken again, so now Robert leads *4-3.

BUT... did anyone see that Robert drop shot at 3-3, deuce?

He did a backspin drop shot from the back of the court that just crept over the net and then back spun back over the net so that before Broads could get to it it was bouncing back on Robert's side of the net, don't think I've ever seen that before, remarkable guile.

Robert's playing like a pensioner, great opportunity for a notable scalp on clay for Liam

Liam broke back as Robert served for the set. First 4 points of the TB went against the serve before Liam went on to take it 7-3 as Robert DFs on SP.

Sound win, in live rankings he will move into the top 160 again with this win.

Well done Liam.

I still want to see that point I referred to in 7th game again, I think it's one of the most remarkable shots I've ever seen, even if it was in a losing cause. If anyone can find the point and do one of those little gifs of it, I think it would blow everyone's mind.

I was asking for someone to post it, and then Liam did it himself!!
