Week 19 - ITF ($60K) - Fukuoka, Japan - Hard

Tara took the first set convincingly, but Asia is digging in at the start of the second set, 6-2 *0-2

A blip on Naomi's radar, 6-1 0-2*

Laura's ranking is in free fall and she may well drop below Katie Swan.

Tara is flying at the moment, confidence is the key.

Live rankings show Laura at GB #8, with Katie Swan just 40 points behind. Laura has 80 points coming off next week, as well as the 15 from this week, so the clock is ticking.

Sad for Laura but pleased for Katy. Would love to see her in Wimbledon Main Draw this year

When I see some of Laura's social media posts and photos these days, I see a young woman who is quite contented with life as it is, thank you very much. I don't really see someone for whom no longer being able to compete at the top level is a burning ache which is driving her on and making her desperate to get back to where she was. Of course I could be wrong but the results seem to say otherwise...

Great for Tara (although I don't think much of Asia's game). Nice to see her getting some results. Let's hope she's regained her fitness and this form carries over into the grasscourt swing.

Laura v Katy's close result confirms their rankings are spot on.

Gabi's shows that tennis is not a given and things ebb and flow, often for no real reason. She's only just turned 20, had a great start to the year, things are never linear. Lykina is yet another top junior who failed to really make a serious impression in adult tennis - was JWR 4 but only made 170 or so at WTA. But obviously has skill.

And Naomi ploughs her own furrow - as top seed, she'll want to do well here.

Laura's doubles has been removed from the OOP.

Gabi & Katy are struggling to make the best of their LL chance, 3-6 1-2*

Wow, that's a lot to be inferring from an Instagram post. Would your preference be for Laura to post pics of herself looking sad? I think we all know that the image we try to project of ourselves may not reflect all the complexity of what we feel. Bizarre how when Laura loses somehow her desire is to blame; anyone else and it's their game or the other player.
