But no, it didn't happen. Nerves won out. All right, toilet break, deep breaths, and relax...

Oh dear how sad, I think nerves got to Emilie in the end, or Maya upped her game considerably in the latter stages of the match, but still no third counter yet.

R32: Emilie LINDH GALLAGHER (GBR) UNR 18yrs lost to Maya TAHAN (ISR) 1158 (CH:1029 June 16) 19yrs (JCH: 272 Jan 17) 6-1 6-7(3) 3-6 cryno

Not to be this week for Emilie. She loses by 1-6 7-6(3) 6-3

If she had won she would have been into 7 points from 3 counters, about WR 1050 helped by the fact that her 7 points were from just 3 counters. Because once you are ranked the fewer counters that give you your points score the better. But if you have less than 3 counters ( combined with less than 10 points ) you are not ranked. An unnecessary silly and illogical rule. 3 points, however obtained generally ( I am sure one could find exceptions, but generally ) would make much more sense.

Turning point was losing seven points in a row from 3-3* 30-30
Almost recovered in the last game, with two break points, but didn't quite make it.
Oh well, back to qualies next week in Tiberias, she'll get that third counter soon

Yes, let's hope so. Next week's is a stronger looking field at the moment, and this was a good opportunity today, having avoided facing any of the seeds and got someone near the bottom of the acceptance list so far. However, there is no doubt that Emilie's game is good enough for her to deserve that ranking, so let's hope indeed that it is soon.

On the shadow transition tour she is a healthy 477 on the ranking list, but none of that counts yet.

Who knows if any real nerves. While close she never got right to the edge. Didn't serve for it, and the two return games and TB she had 'for it' weren't close. To love, 15 and 7-3. She just served 3 DFs in all, one in each set. It's a match that after a very good start swung round over the course of it. Very difficult / impossible to speculate re nerves from the scoring.

Just don't treat live-tennis as gospel. It makes enough bad mistakes in the exIsting rankings and races.

That's certainly true ! I hardly ever look at that site nowadays. But at least it is a guide (of sorts)
