Japan has one of the greatest depths of talent in the world so there must be something more to it than they just happen to be the only ones available to fill out the draw
My original assumption was perhaps a very influential local father somehow involved with the tournament, whether as a sponsor or other way, especially since one of the two sisters has had a MD WC for 9 years now. Yuki Ukai is down near the bottom of the Alt list, and none of those around her are in either draw. The closest, 3 places above, Yuika Sano, was given a WC into qualifying and lost 0 and 0. Sano has had WCs into Gifu too before, including MD, so there is a history of gifting to completely UNR players there... But interesting to know quite why the two Ukai sisters have been favoured for so long. Presumably this year Miki is not even pretending to be an aspiring tennis professional any longer.
Maybe Red Squirrel is right though, and between them the sisters have managed to win/ come runner's up in qualifying tournaments for all these years, with Sano another participant, and that is why they are in as UNRs. At least that would keep the reason clean(er).
Oh, and that's impressive detective work too Red Squirrel!

With 6 in the draw we were always going to have them meeting early somewhere, good that Harriet is playing China to spread the load in coming weeks and I think we may get some popping up in Korea and Thailand depending on how far they go. Tough for Katy, Nara is certainly a top 100 player.
Some good news for the day though, as the completed scores gradually reappear on the 'dead' scores site. Emily and Ksenia have won their L16 doubles match, which gains them a whole 21 points (and which for Emily will mean a +9 pt gain so far next week).
They beat Erika Sema (JPN) and Abigail Tere-Apisah (PNG) 3-6 6-3 10-8
The not so good piece is that this will be the doubles QF match up... but I guess at least there will be one or more Brits in the SF. Laura and Harriet will be favourites, but happy for either pair to win.
QF: Harriet DART/ Laura ROBSON (GBR/GBR)[3] 312 (198+114) vs Emily WEBLEY-SMITH/ Ksenia LYKINA (GBR/RUS) 472 (266+206)
