Although the seeds have been taken out, there appears to be plenty of depth to this tournament and Jay is pulling out some quality wins.
At 236 he sits just in the top 10 not yet 20, there are 3 or 4 guys just above him so a good run could take him up to no 5 before he turns 20. There is the possibility of going past Norwegian phenome Casper Rudd. Regardless a very good week.
Generally we have more of a presence in the top 20 by age than we have had in my time watching tennis closely with Aidan MuCugh squeezing in those not yet 18 and Cam (NZL!) squeezing in those not yet 23. It is unusual for college players to turn it round quick enough to feature.
The singles QF line-up has been completed with just one seed remaining, (5) Henri Laaksonen in the other half from Jay.
Sometimes more marked than others, as here, but to me no surprise that generally overall I'm pretty sure that challengers have the most seeded casualties. They are generally the closest in ability range, with here direct entrants between about WR 110 and WR 260 and some decent qualifiers too ( ) many of whom on their day are dangerous players. As Oakland said it looks a field with plenty depth.
So the lack of remaining seeds may spell some opportunity but also still a field of pretty good players who are clearly having decent weeks.
I watched from the start of the 1st set TB. This is the first time I've seen Jay play. Overall, the match was a decent standard. Two hours for a 2 set match shows that it was hard fought. Jay was comfortably the crowd's favourite.
Jay has played plenty of tennis this week, he has earned soem time at the beach. I don't imagine that he'll feature in challenger quallies again any time soon.
