Kyle wont get a better chance to win an ATP than this youd expect this year. Lets hope he can do it, anything other than the title this week would be disappointment.
Better to go deep and win here or lose and go onto the Masters...?
I always think you should focus on what youve got in front of you and try to do the best you can. Kyle would need to reach the last 8 in MC to get get more points than a final here, semis to beat the points for winning it. I reckon he has got more chance of going deep here than in MC, stick with, try and win a title if he can...
Quite apart from any points consideration I would say more relevant is that Kyle has still to reach an ATP tour final let alone win one.
And while clearly his Australian Open run to the SF had some very big matches for him and great experiences this is a good week to try and see through, especially with other seeds dropping out and maybe a bit more pressure put on - such as with quotes of anything other than the title being a disappointment, which is arguable ( at least to some extent if say someone plays extremely well in beating him ) but a viewpoint probably shared by others. Whether Kyle feels that or not, I imagine he most certainly wants to play well ( and due to different circumstances he hasn't had many matches at all let alone wins since that Australian Open SF at the end of January ), see how he deals with whatever pressures, and yes getting that title would be very good.
So here is certainly the place to be trying to go about his business. Monte Carlo can wait for now.
It is all about preparing for RG, getting games in and winning here will do no halm, I don't know whether Kyle feels any pressure around being the highest ranked player not to win an ATP event, I doubt it. Indeed having such a relatively high rank despite no ATP finals appearances I feel is quite a positive thing, the big points have come in big tournaments and inevitably it will sort itself out perhaps even this week.
As regards preparation for RG winning here would be a lift but really he has shown his game is at a level that he hopefully will be able to despatch his R1 and R2 opponents at RG with minimal effort which would be key to performing well in the second week. Monte Carlo offers a different challenge, a tricky first round against Dolpo and then potentially Busta. Now that's good preparation.
